WTH? I just read on the side of my iron supplement...

I take an additional iron supplement for being anemic, and just noticed on the side of the bottle that it says not to take with eggs, cereal, whole grains, dairy products and something else but the first four I mentioned are what would pertain to me.  I take my iron every morning with my raisin bran crunch & milk, lol--so that is two of things you're not supposed to take it with.  The other things I usually have on hand for breakfast--whole grain bagels & cream cheese, whole grain waffles, yogurt and eggs.  I'm assuming that maybe these foods block iron absorption... but what am I supposed to eat?

  • If I remember right you are supposed to take iron with vitamin c to help the absorption...like with an orange or orange juice.

  • I take mine with orange juice, it helps with absorption like the PP said.  I don't think it's a big deal if you take it the same time you eat your cereal/milk, I just wouldn't down it with a big glass of milk, OJ or water if you don't like OJ would be better.

  • Sometimes certain food block the way that certain drugs/supplements are absorbed.  I think it might be beneficial to take your iron supplements with OJ/water about 30 minutes before you eat breakfast.  I know of a couple of pharmaceutical products that require that for proper absorption.
  • Crap, I guess I should go read my bottle. I take a OTC three times per day, so hopefully at least a few of those times and am getting some absorption.
  • I was anemic and had to take Iron supplements as well. I always took mine in the morning when I eat my cereal, but I take it with OJ to help with the absorption.
