How much EBM per feeding?

I'm trying to figure out how much EBM I need to leave with DH for a feeding.  Kelly mom's calculator says about 4 oz. but that seems low to me.  And they say that stays about the same up until six months of age (I'm thinking ahead to when I go back to work as well).  It would seem to me she will need more as she grows...although I guess she will start on foods at some point.  Anyway, how do I figure out how much she needs per feeding?  TIA.

Re: How much EBM per feeding?

  • We just keep offering until she's full.  It's usually anywhere from 4-6 oz

  • At my 3 month appointment we told the doctor we were feeding between 4 and 5 oz. and he said 4 to 4.5 seemed good and 5 was a little high. ?When she does eat from the bottle she gets 4.5 oz and she eats 6 times per day whether it is from the bottle or the breast. ?If it makes a difference DD has always been at the top of the charts for weight. ?
  • We started out with those little Medela 2.5oz bottles and then just increased from there if he still seemed hungry.  Ethan never took more than 5oz at a time, and still takes 5oz ebm now.

  • My DD is 4 months and always only takes 4 oz. EBM at a feeding and sometimes less.  The only time we offer her more is in the morning if she takes a bottle after STTN (like 10 hours).  And even then she only takes 5 oz.  I was worried like you that that wasn't enough but our pedi reassured us 4 oz is what we should be giving her.

  • Even at 13months Rylee has never taken more than 4.5oz at a time.
  • Here is the equation to use to try to possibly figure it out....take their weight multiply by 2 or 2.5 then divide by the number of feeding in a 24 hour period and that is what they should be taking.  With that said.  DS never took more than 4ozs at a time and did fine.  It is a play it by ear and see game really.  We started at only 2 ozs and moved up from there.  Good luck!

  • C only gets EBM and he's never taken more than 5oz. I always offer 5 but he rarely eats the whole thing, so 4 seems right on target to me.

  • Maggie takes 4.5 to 5 oz of EBM at 8 months.

  • Just wanted to add... the reason why "they" say that the amount the baby takes over time doesn't need to really increase as they grow is because the nutritional content of your milk changes over time to meet their needs.
