rib breakage with twins

The other day i was at work and a customer over heard me talking to another customer about having twins.when she was next to be waited on she told me "not to scare u with them being your frist but my sister had twins and the baby broke her ribs from the inside out" is that really a possibility cause my twin b has been up in my rib cage through my whole pregnancy so far.

Re: rib breakage with twins

  • I had some pretty significant bruisng on my ribs - it hurt to breathe and I couldn't stand for anything to touch me in the area. However, it went away after they were out. I've never heard of breakage, but I'm not sure whether it could happen or not. I'd ask your doc about it.

  • My H was a singleton and MIL broke a rib during labor from pushing. Pregnancy is rough on the body!

  • I haven't heard about breaking, but when I went to the physical therapist at 22w I already had one rib popped out of place. He said it basically was popped out from where the cartlidge normally holds it in place....maybe thats what she is talking about. Either way- definitely NOT as painful as a broken rib would be.

  • I have two on my right side that I suspect have/had hairline fractures from Baby B.  I broke them as a teenager though so they were already somewhat weak.  I know several people who had broken ribs from their singletons though.  It's not that uncommon.
  • While it's not a broken rib, apparently while my mother was pregnant with my twin sister and I, I kicked her ribs so much that the muscle permanently dislocated from the rib.  Almost 33 years later, she can still pop her rib muscle in and out.  She said it really hurt (and when I was pregnant she talked to my belly and told the girls to kick me in the ribs for revenge).
  • My doc told me at my last visit that it isn't unheard of for even a singleton to fracture mom's ribs.
