TTC after 35

progesterone test

Hi there- a lurker and infrequent poster looking for some advice. Just starting the beginning of testing. My OB told me to get a progesterone test at Day 21 (this thursday) but my cyles are 36 days and I've been ovulating around day 20-21 (based on my temperatures and charting.) I told dr about my long cycles but she said go on day 21. Should I follow the drs advice or go later? Thanks everyone.

Re: progesterone test

  • No. You need to go 7 days after you ovulate to get the most accurate numbers....so you should go CD27 or CD28.

Ask her again. If she makes you do the test on CD21 then tell her she will be paying for it when you have to re-test because your P4 was .2 or something.

  • you need to tell her you'll be there 7dpo.?

I am a late o'er too and went on cd21, was told I hadn't ovulated (duh, i was using cbefm) and the next day I got peak on cbefm so they told me to come back in a week.

sometimes you wonder if you're smarter than these doctors/nurses.

    Good luck!?

  • Ignore your doctor, I hate it when they don't listen. The progesterone test should be done at 7 days past ovulation, which in your case (and mine, I also have long cycles), would be around CD 27 or 28. I just went when I knew it was 7dpo for me (I think it was CD 28) and the prog. test was accurate. If you go on CD 21 you will have just ovulated and your progesterone will be really low, hence, not accurate for fertility testing purposes. That will be a total waste of time and you might be put on supplements you don't even need.

I hate doctors that don't listen... drives me nuts!!!!

  • Thanks for your responses. I just wanted to make sure there was not another test I didn't know about that should be done earlier. Temp rose this morning so I think I'll go in next Tues. Feel funny "disobeying" the dr but I didn't even talk to the OB herself about this test- it was a nurse. I think my OB doesn't believe in the fertility awareness method- I have faxed her my charts, asked about an apparent short luteal phase, etc.--- no response. I'm considering switching to an OB who is more "customer friendly." I hate having to be such a self-advocate but at age 37 with 2 M/C, I feel I have to!
