Need some birthday date help here...

I know this is way early, but with our entire family being at least 4 hours away, we have to give everyone a lot of heads up on when things are happening!

Leah's birthday this year will fall on Mother's Day, Sunday, May 10th. We were thinking of having a birthday party for her on Saturday the 9th so that no one would have to come and spend their Mother's Day at a birthday party. This won't look weird, right, that we're not having it on her birthday even though we could? Also, the 9th is my birthday and I don't want it to look like I'm throwing myself a birthday party (a bit weird at my age, ha!). Does this sound okay?

Also, it won't be a big to-do because we'll probably just have both sets of grandparents and a few local friends-- maybe 15 people tops. I was thinking of just doing a nice lunch (maybe Subway sandwiches, etc.). We currently have SO many toys that I was thinking of including on the invitation "no gifts, just bring yourself" or something. I know our parents will bring gifts anyway, but I'd really rather everyone else just came and had a nice time and didn't feel obligated to bring anything since it's not a huge party, more of a get-together.

If you made it to the end of this, WDYT? Does any of this sound strange or off? (Can you tell I've never planned a birthday party before!?).

  • I think it all sounds like a good idea!  I'm sure people will appreciate you not having the party on Mother's day.  And including the "no gift" message on the invites would be fine, you know people will still bring stuff but this way they don't feel obligated to!

  • I don't think its weird that its not on her birthday.  Lots of people have parties intentionally on a different day for various reasons.  I think it is thoughtful of you to leave Mother's Day so others can enjoy time with their families.

BTW, I am planning my own birthday party for this year (its my 30th), so it would not be strange for you to have her birthday party on your birthday.  Good luck.  What a great Mother's Day gift you have!

  • I think it all sounds fine! We are in a similar situation as you in regards to family being far away, and Piper's first birthday was a lot like what you said. I don't think it's weird at all to have it on Saturday versus Sunday (Mother's Day) and I'm sure no one will think you're throwing the party for yourself. Go ahead and put no gifts but like pp said - people will probably still bring them!

My birthday is May 8th :-) And you just reminded me of what I wanted to post and ask...

  • I agree it's a good idea to not have it on Mother's Day.  If you feel uncomfortable having it on your birthday, you could always do it the next weekend.  It's perfectly fine to put "no gifts" on the invitations IMO, but I'm guessing everyone will still bring one.
  • I think it's great what you are doing.  You can celebrate Leah's birthday and you and your family are then free to celebrate Mother's Day.  I didn't know your birthday is the day before Leah's how special!  I can't believe we are already talking about their 1st birthdays--Logan's party will be a week after Leah's.  I understand what you are saying about no gifts but like a pp said I think most people will bring one anyway.  Happy planning!

  • Thanks for the replies! Yes, it is fun that my birthday is the day before hers-- I spent my birthday in labor last year so this year will hopefully be a little less painful! I can't believe I'm even thinking of planning a first birthday party for her...where has the year gone!?

  • The first thing I thought was that would be an awesome way to spend your own birthday! I think it sounds great and not strange at all.
