Obsessions?

Does your DC have an obsession? If so do you foster it and encourage it, or try to move away from it?

DS is obsessed with trains, our family encourages it and buys him everything "choo choo". He will only read choo choo books, etc. I love how excited he gets for it, but worry that nothing else captures his interest once he spies them.  I do not want to ignore what he likes, but am looking for a way to broaden his interests. Thanks!

Re: Obsessions?

  • Just go with it.  He'll either always have a love for trains, or its just a phase he'll grow out of.  Train obsessions are pretty common in little boys, though.

And hey, my kid loves rocks.  Yep, he's always bringing home mud-covered rocks he found in the street for his collection.  I WISH he could be obsessed with something clean like trains :)

  • CARS - any kind of car (matchbox, hot wheels, etc.). He is constantly asking us to "pay cars me". All day long he asks. Not just us either. He asks people that come over to the house too (neighbors, friends, etc.). He is interested in other things though. He loves to look through his books (but I secretly think he is looking for "cars"). He will also play ball, legos, etc. His lovey is a Lighting McQueen plush toy that he calls his "night night car". It goes everywhere he does.

  • DS is the same way with trains - it is the only thing he wants to play with. When he draws on his easel he says he is drawing trains, or insists that I draw him trains. He only picks books with trains, he pretends his food is a train (lines it all up and says "Choo choo! - lol). We live in a part of the city where the subway is above ground, so he sees the trains going by every day and freaks out with joy each and every time.

  • DD loves cats and dogs.

To a certain extent I encourage it - I point out cats and dogs when I see them, bought her a stuffed animal cat and dog, etc. I'm sure it's just a phase so I humor her. If she's 18 and still in love with them, then we'll look at veterinary school!
