What are their thoughts about formula feeding/breast feeding.
The immunization schedule is important to take a look at.
Hours of operation.
Do they charge for late night calls.
Can you see the same doc for well child/sick child visits. Our pedi has a limited schedule, so it helps to know what days she is in the office. I prefer not to see the others in the practice because she knows Brenna better than the other docs do.
What are their thoughts on child rearing? Do they believe in CIO, or are they pro attached parenting? We do AP method and have a very happy child as a result. I would go over the edge if a pedi recommended CIO for DD. The pedi needs to fit your personal philosophy on child rearing.
How relaxed are they with common childhood illnesses? I never want to be calling my pedi in the middle of the night for every little thing. I want clear cut parameters for calling the pedi. I am not one to freak out over things, and want my pedi to share the same philosophy.
How easy is it for you to get a sick visit if you call in the morning for the same day?
Do they have access to a lactation consultant? (if you plan to BF) What are their feelings on BFing? Are they going to want you to supplement with formula? What formula do they recommend (provided there are no other issues)?
Will they round at the hospital you deliver at? (not that this is a huge issue... honestly the one from Children's was fine).
What are their hours? Evenings/weekends?
Do they have a warm line for minor issues? alisonada's pedi has one that she's used quite a bit.. It's saved her a trip from going in to the office sometimes.
Re: Pedi Qs
I want a mani/pedi!
Questions to ask, none of which I asked and am now paying for:
Do they have Saturday appts./late appts. for ill babies? Look somewhere that can offer extended hours so you aren't always worrying about urgent care.
Do they have a doctor line you can call with emergencies and speak to a pedi?
Will you normally see a doctor or a nurse practitioner?
Will they support any alternate vaccine schedules (if you choose this)?
