Is there an alternate spelling for this name?

Isla

I love the way it sounds but dont like the spelling because I know it will get mispronounced.  There are a few things in the area with that name but they are pronounced Is-lah.  So, I know people will screw it up.

I love the way Ayla looks, but think it is just as complicated if I want it pronounced eye-lah.

So is there any alternate spellings that are not awful for this pronunciation?  I normally really hate when people change the original spelling for names but, I would consider it for this name.

  • Eilah, Eyla, Eylah

I don't like the way they look as much, but it is another way to get it pronounced the way it should be id think

  • I didn't know Isla was pronounced eye-la... now I feel silly.

I think you're stuck with a hard to pronounce name hon...sorry.

  • Eila might work. But the actress Isla Fisher is getting really popular, so maybe people won't have such a hard time with it.
  • I really like it spelled Isla.  It might not be as confusing as you think.  I mean, people know that island is pronounced eye-land and not is-land.  Same concept. And the Isla Fisher thing could help too.

  • Don't mess with the spelling of such a nice name.  Isla Fisher might help make this name more recognizable, but seriously...Ayla and Eila and whatever else was mentioned are just silly.

Is "Isla" really that uncommon of a name?  Is it really that hard to pronounce?  It's like "island".  I don't get what the big deal is.

  • The name Ayla is completely different and is pronounced differently, don't go there.

I'm with pp's, I think this name is gaining popularity and won't cause as much confusion as you would think.

  • I-L-A  is easier, but I like I-S-L-A best.

I dont think it is confusing at all.  But, there are streets and a few other things in the area spelled like that, and everyone pronounces them Is-lah.

  • I agree. Stick with the correct spelling. Even if you have to correct people sometimes, it will be worth maintaining the integrity of the name, if that makes sense.

  • Aila maybe?  I LOVE Isla though
  • I posted yesterday about this name b/c dh LOVES It.

Def keep the spelling Isla ~ it really is prettiest that way regardless if you have to correct people.

I just can't decide if i love it enough for the name of my baby ~ naming a person is sooo much harder than making a person ~ and we tried for a LONG time...
