Do you always go with your gut?

With new stages/phases do you depend on books or your instinct..or both?

The only book I read was 'What to expect...' when I was preg with my first.  Other than that I depend heavily on how I feel about things...new foods, sleeping schedules, etc.

I am wondering what everyone else does.  I have friends on both ends of the spectrum.

Re: Do you always go with your gut?

  • Right now i'm reading what to expect. My cousin also gave me a book called your pregnancy week by week. Since it's my first i'm doing a lot of reading and asking my cousin.?

  • I really do not read any books, the only one that I read when I was pregnant was the pregnancy journal told you day to day how the baby was developing.  Now I do not read anything I go by gut and some helpful advice from friends, family and you ladies.

  • when I was pregnant, I read a zillion books. It's not even funny. I feel like the local pregnancy expert among my girlfriends (my SIL calls all the time and when I explain why things are happening and how, she's like - "damn, what are you? a scientist?" LOL)

I never went with my gut while pregnant b/c paranoia often got the better of me, altering my judgment.

As far as parenting goes, my mom is the true authority for me. I call her so many times regarding so many things. I feel like she's the biggest expert out there. She often encourages me to go with my gut, which, after discussing it with each other, is also her gut instinct too. Funny how we can act like our moms!

I also look a lot on the 0-6 month board to get ideas too.

Funny, though. Haven't read any parenting books. I don't find I have much time to, either! LOL

That's not true, actually - I've read the Lull-a-baby book (about finding the window of opportunity to manage your child's sleep patterns)

  • I've read a bunch and the main thing I've learned is to trust my gut.  For everything one expert will tell you to do, another expert will tell you not to.  You could drive yourself nuts.

  • I like to read and find out the current infromation and then I make an informed decision about what is right for me and my daughter. I do talk to my friends and my mom but I find that other people often have outdated opinions and information.

For example: A few people have told me to start solid foods at 4 months because if they wake during the night to eat obviously breastmilk isn't enough for them anymore.
