Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Restrictions after D&C?

I had my D&C on Thursday.  I really only bled that day (they used suction).  The last couple days I've just had some spotting when I wipe, but otherwise I feel okay.  Before the procedure the doctor came and talked to us about what to expect afterwards....he didn't give me any restrictions.  Then, my husband said the nurse told him (while I was still out after the D&C) that we couldn't have sex for two weeks.  I was wondering if anyone else who got a D&C was given this restriction?  I really don't understand if I'm not bleeding and feel okay why we can't have sex.  Any ideas?

Re: Restrictions after D&C?

  • I was given that same restriction....  you cervix likely still open, making you prone to infection.  My restriction ended up being lifted a bit - 11 days - once I had my followup appointment.

Your doc should be able to give you some answers at your followup.

Glad to hear that your recovery is going smoothly.

  • I agree with Leah.  I am glad to hear you are recoving nicely, but you should still stay away from anything vaginally to avoid infection.  Take care,  ((BIG HUGS))

  • I was told the same thing, to wait two weeks.  I know it's hard, but I'd say it's best to wait the two weeks just to be safe. Glad to hear your recovery is going well.  I had my D&C last Friday and I had bleeding for a couple of days but it is gone now :)
  • Just a word of warning - I had only light spotting for six days following surgery, then I had heavier bleeding for a week after that (not bad heavy, just heavier than spotting). I bled for two weeks to the day after surgery, then it just stopped abruptly - it didn't taper off, I woke up to the worst bleeding I'd had thus far, and then it just stopped.

As far as restrictions, I wasn't supposed to have sex, use tampons, or take a bath/go swimming for two weeks. I think a PP mentioned that your cervix is open, raising your risk of infection. Good luck healing, and I'm sorry for your loss.

  • My D&C was the same as yours.  Our restrictions were "nothing vaginally for 2 wks, including intercourse."  I only bled for the first day too... w/ light spotting for about a wk.  The reason for the restrictions is to prevent possible infection to the cervix, which was opened during the procedure... 2 wks gives it time to heal properly.  I know it is frusterating... after 10 days I was going nuts!  LOL  Hang in there.

  • I was told to wait. I'll go for a post op appt a bit over 2 wks from my surgery. I'm sure that's when she'll give me the go to "get busy".?

That area is very sensitive after a D&C and you don't want to risk infection. You want to make sure you are all healed.?

  • I am so sorry for your loss. In regards to your question, I would hold off until you get official clearance from your OB just to be safe. My doctor told me nothing vaginally until she gave me the follow up internal exam scheduled for two weeks after my m/c and d&c. I ended up having to wait 4 weeks for my f/up appt. because of multiple instances causing my appt. to be pushed back, but we waited the entire 4 weeks just to be safe! (Yeah, it wasn't fun, but I figured I would err on the side of caution)
  • Like everyone else, I was told to wait. Did you get any discharge papers? It should be noted on there as well.
