teaching them to use a sippy cup?!?

Max has the fine-motor skills to use the cup but has no interest in drinking anything but formula.  Luke will eat/drink anything but just chews on the opening; doesn't really get how to use the cup.

did you have any tricks/tips to get your dc to use the sippy?

Re: teaching them to use a sippy cup?!?

  • I don't know what the "right" answer is. But with my daughter I would just give her a sippy when she was sitting in her highchair. She mainly played with it. I switched her to a straw cup after no luck with the regular sippy around 10/11 months. That she seemed to get the hang of better. And if you're interested in going the straw cup route, the honey bear straw cup is great with helping them learn that something comes OUT of the cup :)

(you squeeze the bear and it pushes the water through the straw)...

     Good luck!

  • exposure will eventually lead to success. ?we would offer the sippy to them after every meal. ?i'd help till they got a taste and then they'd be on their own. ?it took a few weeks, but they mastered it...and last friday we changed from sippy's to straw sippy's...i thought they'd never get the concept, but by the end of the day they had mastered it. BTW, we tried a few brands and the nuby soft spout with handles did the trick. ? HTH

  • Dh and I each took one of the sippy cups full of water and started drinking the water out of that.  They watched us and then started begging for the cup and mirroring what we did with the cup.

  • we would leave sippy cups out for them to play with on the playmat..it took a few weeks but they finally got the hang of it! gl.
