Food allergies in social situations?

We have a birthday party to go to today.   Chris is allergic to dairy, soy and wheat.  I'm trying to figure out what I can take for him for foods.  They are having pizza at the party but I can't give that to Chris.  I can bring nacho chips for him to snack on and pretzles but I need a lunch type item that I can take with me easily.

Re: Food allergies in social situations?

  • My friends son is allergic to dairy, soy, and deathly allergic to seaseme, which is in practically everything.  She brings Sweet potatoes cut up with cinnaman and sugar as a snack.  She also shops a lot at whole food and finds foods that her son can have.  I would try finding one of the boards for kids with food allergies.  I know she gets a lot of ideas from there.
  • I'm on a facebook circle of moms with kids with allergies and I asked there.  I think I'm going to have to go to Wholefoods.  They are about 20 minutes in the opposite direction that we're going, though....
  • Loading the player...
  • sunbutter and jelly, pasta and sauce, pretzels and hummus....
  • Our Hy-Vee has a whole section of organic/special needs foods.  Not sure if you have them where you live, but there might be one closer than Whole Foods if you do.
  • What about just cut up hot dogs or deli meat?  My girls would eat that in a heartbeat!
  • Pretzels are made with wheat. and a lot of deli meat has milk products in it. You need to read labels real carefully. It will tell you if something has wheat, milk, eggs or soy and stuff like that. GL.
  • I bring whatever my kids will eat during that time of day.  Usually a cereal bar and some snacks b/c it's very portable and I know they'll eat it.

His pretzles are wheat free/glueten free/egg free and milk free.  The deli meat, I asked for the ingredients before I bought it for him.  He likes turkey.  I bought hotdogs that are ok for him.
