Hey there! I just wanted to say how fantastic it is that your DD is doing so well and to thank you for the tips. I wrote awhile back that our OT was fired, and now I know why. I had nothing to compare to, of course, so I never questionned her, but ALL she did for almost 6 visits straight (when she showed up) was place a toy in front of DS's face and see if he grabbed it mid-line. I did ask her time and time again what she planned for him, and she just mentioned that "we go at his pace." Slow and steady. Okaaaaaay.
Fast forward to the past two visits, and what a difference! His new OT is amazing and is now doing all of the things you mentioned and I see a HUGE difference in his core strength. He still flops over when we sit him up, but he is getting stronger. I second that the space saver seat helps a ton, as does putting him on the floor and letting him play/guiding him. Actually, she did say that if she had a baby in this day and age, she'd get rid of all of the "extras" and just play with the baby on the floor, as this is their most natural environment and when they teach themselves to creep/crawl, etc.
I just feel bad that we have missed out on weeks of deveopment b/c of that other OT, and perhaps Sam would be miles ahead? So frustrating. Anyway, just wanted to share and thank you again!
Re: ***pmkmp***
Oh my gosh, that sucks about your old OT! I can see how you wouldn't know any better though. We don't have anyone to compare our therapists to either, so we only know what they have told us. I'm SO happy to hear that Sam is getting better help. You will be amazed at how suddenly something will "click" with him through the help of good therapy.
You're absolutely right. Good ol' time on the floor is the best. We would just guide Aubrey in certain directions and before you knew it, she was doing it on her own. I'm starting to put her in the crawl position and move her legs back and forth. I certainly don't expect her to crawl yet, but hey, why not at least show her that that motion exists! It might just help her pick up on something quicker down the road!
I truly believe a parent's vigilance and determination with doing therapy/play several times a day can do wonders for a baby. Besides, it's so fun to be a part of her doing something new!
GL with your new therapist and I hope you see lots of new milestones soon!
