Think back to your DC's newborn days for a sec...

When they woke up for night feedings, did you change his/her diaper every time?  Would you change them if the diaper was just wet?

Right now we change him every time but I'm trying to decide whether or not it's necessary, to save time and effort at like 3am!

ETA: Isn't it ridiculous that I can't remember what we did w/#1, less than 2 years later??

Re: Think back to your DC's newborn days for a sec...

  • i changed every poopy and sometimes pee if the diaper was really soaked or if dc was wide awake.  if ds had fallen asleep while bfing and had a non-poopy diaper there is no way i would wake him to change him.  my child sucked at sleeping!
  • If it felt wet enough to be changed (like it was squishy) then I changed it. I recall going throug about 12-14 diapers/day when she was newborn.

  • I have a newborn right now (kinda....he 2.5 months old but he's my baby- lol) anyway- he's pretty much STTN (has been for a while) but when he did wake up at 2-3am I would sniff his butt and only change him if he pooped. If it was just pee I wouldn't b/c I didn't want to wake him up more and then have to get him back to sleep. He seemed to go back down better if I just nursed him and then layed him back down. :)

  • NO NO NO! Don't do it! Don't burp or change diapers unless absolutely necessary (poopy)

  • NEVER (unless poop, but he rarely pooped at night)
  • It depended on the baby.

#1 would not abide by a soiled diaper, and was changed every time.

#2 is changed only if it's necessary at night, and it's usually not.

  • If I thought they were pooped I changed them.  Actually with my ds I would change him 1/2way through his feeding to wake him up and make sure he fed on the 2nd side.

Ditto although DD was a decent sleeper.  She also usually pooped while eating so if she didn't I took advantage and didn't change her.

  • I changed every diaper and still do.
  • I stopped changing him every time he woke at a month or two. At that point unless he had pooped we didn't change him. When we did change him it was the 1st thing we did, then we re-swaddled and fed him so that if/when he fell asleep while eating we could transfer him easily.

  • I did change them every time because BFing is a natural laxative and they would ALWAYS poop at some point during each feeding. ?Plus, they had a tendency to wet through the diaper to their clothes so I tried to stay on top of the diaper changes. ?That said, Eric STTN by 9 wks and Kyle was a little later (4 months old). ?So, I don't think it was a problem in getting them to sleep longer stretches.

  • In the newborn days I did.  But I think by 6-8 weeks I think I stopped doing it at every feeding.

  • Wet, no.

Dirty, probably.  Occasionally I have missed a dirty diaper in the middle of the night.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • I only change it if it's a poopy diaper.  My older DD used to poop during EVERY feeding so I had to change her all the time.  My younger DD goes the whole night without pooping so I don't change her.  It's great...
  • I did with DD#1 for a while.  With DD#2, I only changed poopy diapers and I tried to change them BEFORE she ate so she could go back to sleep.  So not worth it otherwise.  Sometimes I could catch her just as she started to fuss, nurse her and get her back to bed without even waking all the way up (which made it that much easier to get her back to bed/sleep).
  • I only changed her if she was wet. If it was just a touch wet I would wait. I don't think she ever pooped in the middle of the night.

  • we cosleep* and I've never changed at night unless they pooped.

*relevant b/c I rarely get out of bed at all.  So defintely not for a diaper

  • Yep, I changed them every time.

  • Did I change her every time? No, I changed her twice every time. I had to take her diaper off as one of the steps to get her to wake up enough to actually eat. And then she pooped as she nursed at night. Every.single.time. milk in, poop out.

She was pushing 3mo before I got down to just changing her once at every night feeding.

  • Yeah, we always changed them before each feeding.....I'm not even sure if we sometimes did it when they were dry....we might've skipped a changing here & there, but I know that is always how I started out, diaper & then bottle.

  • I did even when she was wet because she wouldn't eat & not go back to sleep.

  • No.  I was usually too asleep.
  • I've blocked out those days to protect my own sanity. . .

I'm thinking I only changed if the diaper felt really soaked or they had a poopy.

  • We never changed DD unless she had pooped.  It never bothered her.

With DS we usually always change him.  He can't stand to have a wet diaper.

  • I think I changed him every time. I don't know if I could bear to do that again, though. Ugh, those were hellish nights.

I don't think I did at night unless she was really wet, but I honestly don't remember for sure.  It's all kind of a blur.

Ditto this. I seriously have a mental block of the first 4 months.

What winery said. DD is infinitely easier than DS was. Her morning diaper occasionally weighs what she does, but she doesn't fuss about it.
