Re: coposkopy?
its spelled colposcopy, and they just still a camera up your hoo hoo i think. try googling it, i am sure you will find information. a little bit i found was-
During the colposcopy procedure your gynecologist uses the colposcopy to visually exam the cervix. Colposcopy is a simple and painless procedure that is performed in the gynecologist's office. The procedure takes about ten or fifteen minutes.
I haven't had one, but here is some info.
Colposcopy
If you have certain symptoms that suggest cancer or if your Pap test shows abnormal cells, you will need to have a test called colposcopy. In this procedure you will lie on the exam table as you do with a pelvic exam. A speculum will be placed in the vagina to help the doctor see the cervix. The doctor will use the colposcope to examine the cervix. The colposcope is an instrument with magnifying lenses (like binoculars), that lets the doctor see the surface of the cervix closely and clearly. The doctor may "treat" your cervix with a weak solution of acetic acid (similar to vinegar) to make any abnormal areas easier to see.
Colposcopy is not painful, has no side effects, and can be done safely even if you are pregnant. If an abnormal area is seen on the cervix, a biopsy will be done. For a biopsy, small piece of tissue is removed from the area that looks abnormal. The sample is sent to a pathologist to look at under a microscope. A biopsy is the only way to tell for certain whether an abnormal area is a pre-cancer, a true cancer, or neither.
not to scare you, but to be honest- when I had a colposcopy (which isn't just ?look- it's a biopsy) it was VERY painful. Mostly afterwards. I just thought you should be prepared because I was planning on going back to work and had to go home because I had bad cramping and was in tears.?
Ask your OB if you have more specific questions and find out if it's truly necessary during pregnancy. I had mine a couple years ago, so I don't know how it's different when pg.?
?
I'm pretty sure that the colposcopy is actually just the looking part. They only take a biopsy if they see abnormal cells.
I am CIN III (carcinoma in situ), and I've had a couple colposcopies during this pregnancy at my pelivc oncologist's office. A colposcopy itself is not uncomfortable at all, it's a procedure where the doc uses a colposcope (special microscope) to look at your cervix, but the biopsies are. They haven't taken any biopsies from me since I've been pregnant, so the procedure is relatively painless.
It is a bit uncomfortable (pressure) since my doc has to use a giant speculum to fit the microscope inside... he has a special microscope for pregnant ladies, since he won't take biopsies to be sent to the lab... they have to kind of bring the lab to you! I would not let the doctor take biopsies while you're pregnant. I would think that s/he would know not to do this.
You're having the colposcopy because you had an abnormal pap where they found either CIN I, II, or III cells. Don't freak out, but these cells can develop into invasive cervical cancer... but it takes years! Cervical cancer is the slowest growing cancer out there. Trust me... I have CIN III/ carcinoma in situ, we found out at 8 weeks, and they let me continue the pregnancy. So far, the cells haven't gotten any worse.
I'm kind of confused as to why you can't change docs. If you don't like your OB, I would definitely switch. If they won't switch you within the practice, leave the practice. I would never want an OB-GYN I wasn't comfortable with when I wasn't pregnant, let alone when I'm pregnant.
