Storing Breastmilk Question

So... we never really had this issue with the bottle-hating Mia....

When I pump, I tend to get 4oz from one breast and 2oz from another (totally normal for me, even with Mia.  I'm weird).  I have been told to store breastmilk in 4oz packages for easy bottle-making.  So...

What do I do with the 2oz packages?  Can I save it and put it with another 2oz the next day?  Or just have several 2oz packages in the freezer and defrost two at a time?

(needless to say Micah will drink from the bottle!  Freedom!  Sweet freedom!)

Re: Storing Breastmilk Question

  • When Owen would take a bottle (which was random on and off), it usually was around an ounce per hour... so sometimes it was only 2 ounces and later was 4 - and never more than 4 that I recall (but this is very normal for a bf baby). ?I found that storing in smaller increments was helpful and that having some 2 ounce bags was nice (especially since he was finicky about it - avoided waste).

  • I just stored in whatever increments I pumped (although not more than 4 at a time). It was nice to have a 2 oz. bag in case she downed 4 ozs. but was still hungry.

Yay for a bottle taking baby!!

  • That's kinda what I was thinking.

She already takes about 4oz from the bottle.

  • If I got like an extra surplus of an ounce or two, I would leave the bag in the fridge and add more milk to it the next pumping session.

this is also what i did.

  • I used to freeze four ounce increments... so when I had four ounces I would freeze it.  :)

so.... if you are pumping six... freeze four and put two in the fridge.  the next session freeze 4 and put 2 more in the fridge.  when it has cooled you can combine the two.  :)
