breech baby - version scheduled - help

I had my 36 week appt today and we discovered my baby is breech. (and just last week she was head down...) so my doc wants to do a version to turn her. It is scheduled for Friday afternoon.

I've heard they can be painful although I will be given pain meds thru an IV.

If you have had one done, tell me all about your experience.

Was it successful? (did baby stay head down?)

I'm trying to stay calm... thanks!

Re: breech baby - version scheduled - help

  • no help here...but wanted to wish you good luck
  • DS was a breech baby, but my doctor didn't try a version. . .I just had to have a c-section a week after I found out he was breech.  Good luck to you, I hope your little one turns around easily! ;)

  • My DD was frank breech my whole pregnancy. They scheduled a version (because it was my 2nd pg). I went in at 38 weeks 5 days, and at my hospital then they induce you right away too. I was given an epi, not for pain but in case they needed to do an emergency c/s. Then they do an u/s to see if the baby is still breech. My doctor used mineral oil and then her and her resident pushed the baby, it took 2 times to turn it, then they check on the u/s and let the baby's heart rate return to normal and it was done. Took less than 15 minutes total. It did hurt bad but stll better than a c/s but I began to contract before they needed to induce me (I had GD so I would've been induced early anyways).

Alot of people are against them so do your research and ask your doctor about how many times they have perfomed them. I had to go to a different doctor, since I was also at Children's hospital I felf confient that my baby would be safe. Also, see about getting induced so the baby wouldn't flip again after being turned, I have learned not all doctors induce right away or wait long enough to see if the baby would flip on it's own.

  • It was very uncomfortable, but I don't know if I'd call it "pain."  A lot of pulling and pressure.  You get some terbutaline to relax the uterus, but no pain meds (at least I didn't).

Each attempt only lasts about 30 seconds, so it's relatively short-lived discomfort (do have your DH or someone there so you have a hand to squeeze).

My OB did 3 attempts, but none were successful and I delivered an 8 lb. 15 oz. footling breech baby by c-section a week and a half later.  I honestly thing that there was something in my anatomy or hers that was preventing her from turning.

They'll keep you on the monitors for about an hour after the version.

  • DS #2 was breech and I did have the version done. It worked for me, he stayed head down, and I had a great vaginal delivery. I really wanted to try everything to get him turned b/c I had a good vaginal delivery with our 1st born, and wanted to avoid the c-section if at all possible.

I tried to get him to turn on my own, all the rocking exercises, etc, but to no avail.

I went into L&D for my external version. They administered a muscle relaxer via IV, and them my OB came in and did the version while a nurse used an u/s to track the progress. I was on a monitor the entire time to make sure the baby?s HB stayed good. The version worked, and I was monitored for about an hour or two afterwards to make sure the baby handled the procedure okay.

I know some people have a horrid experience with it, and I was so nervous, but I have to say the most painful part of the procedure for me was the IV, the nurse blew my vein while giving me the muscle relaxer, and that really hurt. The version was uncomfortable, but not all that painful.

I think it worked b/c I have several factors in my favor (2nd baby thus looser ab muscles & a normal size baby - he was 7.5 lbs when born on his due date)

Good luck if you decide to go for it. In the mean time, check out https://www.spinningbabies.com/ to get some tips on trying to get the baby to turn on your own.

  • basically ditto Hikerbeth. ?The OB tried a lot of times though, he was pretty frustrated LOL ?My version story is in my bio. ?
