Sleeping on my Chest?

Ds sleeps fairly well until like 4am, ok so it's in his carseat but whatever.  He then wakes and will not be put back down.  Lately he's been sleeping on my chest, while I'm in bed and will continue sleeping a couple more hours.  He's on his stomach.  I do fall asleep, but not very soundly.  Is this is huge SIDS risk?  I guess I figure that he's on me, I'm right there.

Re: Sleeping on my Chest?

  • Some will probably tell you this is dangerous, but my DS slept on me A LOT when he was little.  It was actually some of the best sleep we both got.  I miss those days now.  He doesn't want to sleep on mommy anymore.  Sad

  • No, he's totally fine that way. Just make sure you're in a position where you're not going to drop him. And risks of sleeping on the stomach is mostly an issue of suffocation -- if his head is turned to the side might be a bit safer, but even face-down, their noses flatten out to let them breath through the sides of their nostrils and not suffocate.

  • We did this as well, it was the only way anyone got any sleep.  As our pedi told us "It's all about survival those first few months!"

We do have a king size bed, so whoever had the baby that night got in the middle so there was no chance of falling.

  • I did this a lot too... I always wrapped the sheet around me COMPLETELY so he couldn't wiggle and fall.

I don't think it's ideal, but I think a lot of moms do it just to get some sleep.

  • a friend of mine works in a pediatrics office... an infant in their practice just suffocated to death while laying on mom's chest in bed.

    i don't think it's safe.

  • I'm sure it is a risk, but we used to do it all of the time.  For the past few weeks, DS had been doing this every morning with me.  We both got extra sleep, and it was the highlight of my day practically (such a great snuggle).  He's just now hating to sleep like that, and I am sad.
  • DD sleeps on my chest a lot too and she loves it! Both DD and mommy get a few hours of great sleep :)
