My first triplet questions: Exercise

Thank you for all the support and suggestions! I'm on Amazon right now ordering the Dr. Luke book. I had also planned to order a few pre-natal workout DVDs, but  now I don't know if that's okay with a triplet pregnancy. Are you allowed exercise? Should I stick with toning and yoga-type workouts? Walking? Thanks!

Re: My first triplet questions: Exercise

  • Oh - and also, two of the babies were measuring right at 6w2d, and one was at 6w1d. RE said that was fine - is it? That one was a bit smaller than the others too...

  • Personally, I was told to "take it easy" from the beginning. No one said, "Do not exercise" but that's what they were getting at. I still worked up to about 24 weeks (which was a couple weeks to long, really, because I was on my feet a lot) and I was ok, so I think light, non-straining exercise (like walking) is ok. And there were a few times in my pg that one baby measured a day or two off, and they were all born healthy and fine, and about the same weights.. so I wouldn't worry about that.

  • I would ask your doc about exercise...I wasn't allowed to exercise or have sex until 12 weeks due to IVF and twins. After that I just walked...of course I only had twins...not triplets! =)

When they measure your babies on ultrasound...it is somewhat of a rough estimate so if they are not all the same don't worry...it's normal. One of my girls always measure a few days different than the other but when they were born there was only a 4 ounce difference between the two. As long as they all continue to grow and one doesn't start to lag behind by a full week.

GL and blessings to you and your babies!

  • Honestly.. I wouldn't order anything yet and waste money. Unless you are ok with not using the dvd's very long into your pregnancy. And.. until you consult with a MFM about your particular pregnancy and what you can and can't do.

I wasn't in the best shape of my life when I got pregnant, but I wasn't in bad shape either. A triplet pregnancy is very hard. From my experience, after I hit about 16 weeks, my energy totally drained. I went to NYC at 12 weeks and was walking around there for 4 days and thought I was going to die. My breathing was really affected starting around 10 weeks. I was obviously showing by 10 weeks also. You'll notice how your breathing will get affected very quickly.

You really need to take it easy. I ended up out of work and on bed rest at 23 weeks also. I was not allowed sex my entire pregnancy.  I would stick to very low impact things. Walking and maybe some low impact yoga. maybe.

Not trying to scare you, but it's a whole different bird than even a twin pregnancy. Be prepared to be resting. Alot!

  • just say no to exercise. :) all of your calories need to go to the growing babies. plus, the further along you get, the more pressure three babies will put on your cervix. so get used to being lazy. :P

  • I wasn't allowed to exercise at all my entire pregnancy. Better check with your Dr first. Every pregnancy is different so you might be able to.

  • I'm only pg with twins, but I know that they can measure differently.  Being that it's only 1 day, it's not big.  Remember that the # of days is based off averages and not every baby grows at the same rate.

As far as exercise, I would talk to your RE or OB.  Mine is fine with me working out, as long as I don't push myself and keep my heart rate under 140...however, again, I'm only pg with twins.  I primarily use the elliptical, walk on a treadmill and do yoga/pilates.

  • No exercise for me either. I did some walking but not much else. I was to tired to even think about exercise.
  • just wanted to share this post from triplet connection, might be useful for you... :)

That was really helpful (and a little scary!)! Thank you! I visited the site this morning but I haven't had time to weed through it all! I'll have to devote a nice chunk of time to it. Right now my mind is all over the place!

  • Ask your dr. i did do some exercing at the begining and worked on my feet till i was 24 weeks along. I should have stayed off my feet and rested more since i ended up on bedrest 2 days after i was done working. my babies were born at 32 weeks very healthy, just a little small and spent time in the nicu for feeding and growing.
  • I walked about 15-20 minutes per day until I was about 16 weeks, after that it was just too hard. ?(I actually asked my peri for a handicap tag for my car at 16 weeks because the walk from my car to my office was almost 1/2 mile each way and it was exhausting me.) ?In Dr. Luke's book, there are some exercises that you can do while sitting and I did those right up until the end (36 weeks).

    Best of luck to you!

  • Oh my gosh, I missed your post on triplets!  That's so exciting.  I waited until a few weeks ago to read the Dr. Luke book.  I wish I had read it from square 1.  You'll love it!  I was told to hold off on excercise pretty much the whole time with twins.  He said I could do walking at 14 weeks but by 20 weeks I needed to slow down.  I was so stinkin tired in that stretch that I failed to do so.  Wow, triplets, that's so exciting!
  • I was told no exercise from almost the beginning.  I walked (mostly around the mall...lol) but by around 20 weeks even that started to really wear me out.  A triplet pregnancy is different from even twins - you really do need to take it easy and EAT! Eat eat eat.  Dr. luke's book is great.

    Good luck with everything!!
