When did you start a bedtime routine?

DD is just about 3 weeks old. I want to think about establishing a bedtime routine. She sleeps in our room still, but i would like to get her washed up, dressed for bed, read her story, give her her bedtime bottle and have her fall asleep in her room. On the one hand, I know she won't really get it yet, but i think its good to establish it and have her grow into it. DH thinks it is too early. Also, her bedtime feeding is not at a consistent time yet so he thinks the routine would be a waste still. I figure she can not tell time yet, so as long as the routine is in place it should not matter if it is at 5pm or 8 pm.

Opinions? When did you start the bedtime routine?

Re: When did you start a bedtime routine?

  • I didn't start until 8 weeks I think.  I don't think it can hurt- I just know I couldn't follow a regular routine at all at 3 weeks but if you can then go for it!

  • we tried to start a routine and at 3wks you didn;t even think ot try to get DS in to bed before 10pm becuase he would not have it. As he got older is gradually got earlier and earlier, Now he goes to bed a 7pm.

  • We started around 8 weeks. At three weeks she was still sleeping so much, but you can always give it a shot. Can't hurt.
  • we started around 5 wks
  • we already started one. DH works nights, so we have so far established jammie time and a quick wash up, along with bedtime bottle in bed w/ me.  DD sleeps in our room and we just got her days n nights fixed, so everything else is within a 2 hr variation on time, but at least she knows...i think...

when i go back to work, i'll need to get her full bath into her night routine too

  • We started it the day she came home from the hospital. We started at 630, bath, bottle and story. We aimed to have it done by 715 because thats when we eventually wanted her to go to bed like her big sisters. I formula feed so she is scheduled to eat every 3 hours so it works perfect. I think kids thrive on routine and I can  tell you that my littlest one has had her 2 long naps and bath routine from the very start. My whole house shuts down at 2pm for a 2 hour nap and at 730 you can call my house and all the kids are in bed. It has worked very well for us.
  • WE started ours at 5 weeks. I would wait a bit.

  • We started at 7 weeks, but it still isn't really working.

I would have hated trying to do it at 3 weeks, but that's just me. It wont hurt anything for you to try if you want to.

  • We started at about 6 weeks, but only because he started sleeping through the night and we wanted to recreate whatever it was that made him sleep!  At Will's 2 month appointment we asked the pediatrician and he told us that at 2 months it's not necessary, at 3 months you should start working on it, and it should be fully implemented by 4 months.
