whaaaat?

So Cam got a haircut yesterday and the hairdresser put it into a 'fauxhawk' he loved it! So this morning he asked if I could do it and I said yes. Fast forward to right this second, and I got a phone call from the school saying it's gang related and he would need a new haircut. I explained it's just gel, and he had to go to the nurse and comb it out. I just scanned the handbook and it says nothing about mohawks. WTF

Re: whaaaat?

  • That is crazy.  They have nothing else to worry about than a kids haircut.

  • LOL That reminds me of when Imy brother asked me to cut his hair. But I didn't know how to use the razor and fogot to put the blade in so I gave him a blade ZERO. Ooopss! He was bald! It looked fine but the next day I got a phone call in work to say that he had been suspended from school because of his hair...or lack of! ooppppssss My Dad was really angry at that!

  • That's absolutely ridiculous!  Fauxhawks are pretty popular right now.  Aren't they just the hair on both side gelled up a bit?

  • Oh...pleeese...that is a bit much.  I never heard of such a thing in daycare.  I know in my kids private school the haircuts had to be conservative...no shaved in symbols, etc.  Are there gangs in your area?  We don't have any here...that I've heard of but then we're out in the sticks.
  • yeah and then I slick down the sides so it doesn't stick up- I think it looks really really cute
  • Seriously?  That is just ridiculous!

  • That is so efffin' lame. I do Owen's hair in faux hawks all the time for school.
  • I am all for appropriate school clothes and appearance, but I really fail to see how this is gang related. For crying out loud, its a kid with a popular hair do! I'd ask to see the policy on this one.

  • I plan to ask, I have a conference with his teacher tonight anyways. There are no gangs in my town that I know of. At least not any letting 6 year olds in.
  • When I picked up DS, I would ask for them to explain how exactly faux hawk is gang related..

  • He's 6. It's first grade.
  • He's 6? And they are worried about his hairstyle? That's nuts to me!

  • First of all, if it's not in the handbook, I'd fight it.  Of course, I am very anti-establishment.

Second, I never knew many punks in gangs.  My dh was a punk.  Mohawks, the whole bit...and he was straight edge.

Moral of the story is...they are being ridiculous in my opinion.  It is not a "gang" haircut.  And he's only 6!  Jeez.

LOL - this made me spit my water out.

  • I agree with PP-- when you pick him up, ask them to show you where it says he can't have his hair that way. That's just obnoxious!!
  • Hmmm, these days it seems like the fauxhawk is more of a preppy style! Not at all gang-related. Is there a gang whose "trademark" is a mohawk??
  • Are side pony tails banned as well? Because everyone knows the side pony is a sign of promiscuity...
  • That's crazy. I fix my son's hair in a faux hawk all the time and I always get compliments on it when we're out. I think it's so cute!
