taxes

DH and I got married last year so I've never done our taxes together before, but every year I get a couple thousand dollars back and he gets about $800 or so. This year the deductions for daycare went down and when we add together, we get back about $300 and owe the state. Separate filings aren't any better.  :(    Our income is almost the same as other years too.

I was really looking forward to paying something off, this makes me really sad.

Re: taxes

  • Sorry. We owed 17$ last year, but I'm hoping with DD, we'll at least break even.
  • Loading the player...
  • I was going to suggest the recovery rebate credit, but looks like your DC was born in 2009...
  • Did you do them yourself? If so, can you have a professional review them? When we were married and did our taxes (we had them done by a professional), we got a great return and we both made good money that year. That was without baby but we do own a home and itemize our deductions...
  • Did you guys change your W-4's when you got married? That may be why the amount back has changed.

Also, I know what you mean... This year we owe again and get just a bit back fromt he state

  • I always use tax software, I think I am going to try it on a few different sites before I file (you don't pay until you file). It seems like this year instead of deductions for child care you just get one credit (the deduction would do more for me) and for property tax you can take the standard deduction and they just give you an extra $1000 deduction instead of your actual amount... but then the minimums for all my other deductions went up - so almost nothing I have counts for anything this year even though expenses went up.

     So frustrationg.
