opinions needed on sleep issue

Is it better to:

a) let DS sleep 30 minutes and get him up when he wakes and can't put himself back to sleep (he stays in the crib until he starts crying and then we get him after a few minutes) or...

b) run to his room at the slightest movement and give him paci, shush him, pat him, etc. to get him to sleep for an hour (have to do this very often after he wakes up from his 30 minute nap)?

Re: opinions needed on sleep issue

  • I would try option B first.  I've read that if you do this consistently, he will learn how to fall back to sleep on his own.  But, then again, I've tried this with LO, and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.  She's never been a 2hour napper though, but sleeps well at night, so I'm ok with that.

  • I'm no expert, so I'm not sure which is "better", but I was doing B and got tired of that and am now doing A. I think my DS is just a cat napper.

  • I would generally say b.  But can you try having him nap somewhere else?  Maybe a bouncy seat or swing?  That might help soothe him to stay asleep.  According to the No-Cry Nap solution and many other nap books I've read, babies need to nap for at least 1.5 hours at a time.  Currently Cole is napping in the bouncy.  He used to nap in the crib, and I'm not sure what changed his mind.
  • I'm dealing with the same issue, and usually I do B until I can get her back to sleep.  It usually works better if I can catch her before she makes any noises, like when she kind of starts to move around but isn't really awake yet.  If I can catch her then, I'll put the paci in her mouth and she'll usually go right back to sleep without really even waking.  If I wait until she starts making noise and really waking up, it's a lot harder to get her back to sleep.
