Babies: 0 - 3 Months

to those who feed on demand

I'm feeding DD on demand. DD tends to eat about every 2-4 hours during the day and will usually wake up every 3 hours at night. However, there will sometimes be the odd night where she'll sleep for 5 hours.

I love that 5 hour stretch of sleep but was wondering if it was bad to let her sleep so long without being fed. I had heard that infants shouldn't go more than 4 hours between feedings since some babies get hypoglycemic and won't be able to wake themselves up enough to cry that they're hungry.

Do those of you who feed on demand, let your DC go for more than 4 hours between feedings at night or do you wake your child up after 4 hours?

  • Once they've regained their birth weight, you can let them sleep!

  • i let my DD go longer, i believe theres no need to worry about letting them sleep thru unless they are not gaining weight. But if your DD is gaining then by all means enjoy those stretches! :)
  • After he regained his birthweight I let him sleep as long as he wanted. He had his first 5 hour stretch around your DD's age, but it was rare. Still, I would let her sleep as long as she's eating enough throughout the day time.

  • nope, you're fine. ?if she's regained her birth weight (assuming she has), then let her sleep. ?enjoy the long stretch!
  • I let DS sleep as long as he is willing at night. The LC said it was fine for babies to have one 4-6 hour sleep a day. DS is up for much of the day with some small afternoon naps, and then he sleeps a 4-6 hour chunk at night.
  • I feed upon demand. I feel as if he's getting enough since he can eat anywhere from 1.5-5 hrs apart.

  • DS eats every 2 hours during the day & cluster feeds in the evenings. Lately he's been sleeping 5-6 hr periods at night & I'm thrilled. Check out my post above about the 6 weeks stats since our babies are about the same age.
