Did anyone not do rice cereal?

DS is 11 weeks and our ped gave us the green light if we wanted to start rice cereal. I think we are going to hold off for at least another four weeks, because he is sleeping well and gaining weight just fine without it. It sort of seems like rice cereal is just a filler and doesn't have a nutritional purpose except to help them stay full longer. Anyone not do rice cereal at all?

  • Not sure if this is the answer you are looking for but...we started with oatmeal instead of rice.  She loves it.

  • We went to barley. DD didn't do well with oatmeal because it messed dd's belly up. We never gave rice because the pedi said it could constipate her. ?
  • We skipped it and started Lily on veggies and fruits at 5 1/2 months.

11 weeks is WAY too young for any type of solid IMO. ?The most current recommendations is 6 months, but if you have to before then, at least wait until 4 months.?

Why would you want to fill your kid up with something that has no nutritional value at a time when growth is so very important? ? I just don't get it. ?Oh, and solids= STTN is an OWT. ?

  • I'm surprised the pedi gave you the green light. Most doctors won't even discuss solids until 4 months.

When the time comes, don't necessarily think of rice cereal as a filler.  Cereal isn't really meant for nutrition, rather it's meant to teach your baby how to use a spoon and swallow.

  • I was surprised too, but my DS is taking 7-8 ounce bottles already. He basically said that if he is taking a bottle and not getting satisfied, we could try it if we wanted to. My DS has been pretty happy with formula so we are definitely not trying it for at least several more months.
