Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Teach me about solids

I really don't know much about starting solids. ?I've done a little reading here & there and I plan on doing a lot more, but I'm wondering what you ladies have been told.

Our pedi said we could start solids now... so I plan on starting Friday with rice cereal once in the morning. ?I asked about starting veggies first and he laughed and told me kids will be kids... they like what they like and don't like what they don't. ?He said I could could start veggies if I wanted to but he recommended bananas. ?

How often and when do you move to more or to the next stage... etc. ?Does anyone have a good site to recommend?

Thanks!

Re: Teach me about solids

  • We're not even close to solids yet, but the pedi told us to start veggies first because after trying fruit babies won't like veggies as much.

  • we're starting tomorrow with sweet potatoes per our pedi's recommendation.  i really had planned on waiting until 6 months, but dd has pretty much hit all the things on "the checklist" - sits up unassisted, lost tongue thrust reflex, double birth weight, etc.  my pedi recommends that ebf babies wait till about 6 months, but agrees that dd is a bit ahead of the game so she gave the go ahead.

    wholesomebabyfoods.com is an AWESOME resource.

  • Our pedi recommended we try the following:

Start with rice cereal once a day - in the morning.  Once he masters that, move on to rice cereal twice a day - in the morning and in the afternoon.  After 2 weeks on the cereal twice a day, introduce a green veggie in the middle of the day.  Try a new veggie every couple days.  Rotate between green and yellow/orange veggies as babies tend to like the yellow veggies better.  After all veggies have been introduced, then introduce fruits.  He suggested adding the fruit to the rice cereal in the morning and in the afternoon.  The whole process will take around 2 months and in the end he will get cereal mixed with fruit in the morning and in the evening and a veggie in the middle of the day.
