(i mean he just goes to sleep when he nurses, i can't really stop it!), how am i supposed to not have this happen in the future as a 'crutch' when sleep training? i am stressing about it already ok tia nft
I don't BF, but when DD falls asleep when eating and we don't want her to, we do everything to try and keep her awake...sometimes it's really hard. Taking her socks off, even clothes sometimes, loud noises and I try to move around if I can and even pull the bottle out of her mouth when I know she's still hungry....all of this helps sometimes, other times nothing works!

I always nurse to sleep at BEDTIME. All the other times during the day it's EASY. She says in the book that you might have a baby that nurses to sleep at night. That is okay. Don't worry about that.
And you will get to it. He's still young. Don't stress about the sleep training and the nursing to sleep quite yet. Plus, JAR knows whatsup when it comes to this business. Just spoil him now, and worry about the rest later. Like me. At 4 months LOL!
i dont have an answer, i'm in the same boat. especially when she falls asleep at the first breast and then i dont know if i should even offer her the second breast (and then i'll try putting her down and pumping it - but of couse she'll wake up anyway, ugh)...
then at night when i WANT her to nurse to sleep, even if it's not best practice cuz i'm tired, she wont. so confusing.
I nurse before bed. Sometimes he falls asleep, sometimes he doesn't.
I try as hard as I can to keep him awake when I nurse him before bed, but even when he eats for a full 30 min. he sometimes does it basically asleep and never wakes up when I burp him or put him down.

My DS still falls asleep every night when I nurse him. If, on the off chance he doesn't, I rock him to sleep. Don't sweat it--you really can't control all aspects of parenting that books make you think you "should" be able to.

You know what? Nursing a baby to sleep is the most natural thing in the WORLD. If it wasn't "right" - babies wouldn't get so sleepy at the breast (or bottle.) You are soothing him and loving him and feeding him and he feels so warm and secure that he falls asleep. Don't get caught up in "shoulds" and "bad habits" and blah blah blah. Treasure this time. It will be over before you know it. Nurse him, rock him, love him - do whatever the helll you want. He will turn out just fine.
Wheee!
"When it comes to sleeping, whatever your baby does is normal. If one thing has damaged parents enjoyment of their babies, it's rigid expectations about how and when the baby should sleep." ~ James McKenna, Ph.D., Mother Baby Behavioral Sleep Center, University of Notre Dame
Freaking ditto Lucy...there are so many damn books out there with "shoulds" and "should nots" and they all criticize each other and think their way is the right way.
Not to say that I didn't take SOME suggestions from each of them but in the end I end up doing what works for MY unique child. Every baby is different and there's no tried and true way to do things....
I nurse DD for naps AND bedtime because that's what works for her right now...when she gets a little older, if there's a problem, I will address it then.
