Babies: 0 - 3 Months

xp: how many clothes do I need?

We're having twins so I figure I'll just double whatever you recommend. ?I had my shower on Saturday and got very few clothes. ?We did get a bunch of short sleeve onesies... maybe 12 in each size of 0-3, 3-6, and 6-9. ?We received maybe 10 sleep & plays in newborn size and a few in bigger sizes. ?We also received 4 shirt/pant outfits in 0-3. ?

?How many do I need to buy? ?What do they really wear for the first 3 months??

Re: xp: how many clothes do I need?

  • Sleepers/jammies are easy - especially ones with zippers.  Buy more than you'd think - you'll be surprised how much gets dirty and spit up on in a day and you don't want to be doing laundry EVERY day (though you probably will anyways!)

    Good luck!

  • Loading the player...
  • Lots of sleepers and onesies in NB and 0-3 month size - we didn't have enough sleepers and had to do laundry a lot (they get pooped on a lot in the beginning!) ?

You don't need too many dressy outfits since newborns sleep a lot in the beginning anyway...maybe a nice outfit or two for pictures and an outing here and there...?

  • Ditto what pp have said....lots of sleepers, onesies and pants that match the onesies (and socks and scratch mittens!)  I try to change DD everyday out of her sleeper so it helps me motivate myself to get up and ready for the day, but she just wears a onesie and matching pants/socks w/ her scratch mittens.  And make sure you stock up on NB sizes, especially since you're having twins.  Lots of people told me to just get 0-3 months and very few NB sizes....DD is still in NB size clothes and she's almost 5 weeks!  I've found that Carters seems to be pretty true to size with their month sizings....I have some onesies from Target that are NB size and they are HUGE on DD!  Kohls has some great sales on Carters onesies in 5 packs (also if you have a Carters store near you they have great sales right now)  GL!

  • Lots of footed sleepers - that's basically all I would have for the first few weeks.  Get some in NB size, we didn't have any so we had to stop by the store on the way home from the hospital (DS surprised us 3 weeks early)
  • I second the footed sleepers.  Everyone told me gowns were great for newborns but I hated them because they would ride up.  The first week or so we dressed her as they did in the hospital - a tee shirt and a diaper.  The first week we added a hat, the second week we instead added socks.  We then started with sleepers because we got some as Welcome Home gifts (only had one before she arrived).  We also like the tee shirt or onesie with knit pants - easy to slip on and off for changings.

For sleep, we do a onesie with a sleepsack.

Newborn sizes are hard - for some they work for weeks, for some maybe a week.  My daughter turned one month yesterday and her newborn sized sleepers look like unitards on her.

  • Besides what the pp recommended, I would also buy some preemie clothes. DS wore preemie clothes for a week or two and he was 7lbs 10 oz. Same was true for my friend for both kids.

I usually do baby wash twice a week. I would plan on at least 3 outfits per day for each baby.

Also, the gerber onsies shrink a ton when you wash them. I think DS wore the newborn size for only a day or two. When he was in 0-3 month clothes, he was in 3-6 month gerber onsies. Right now he is in 3-6 month Carter's onsies, but 12 month gerber onsies! I dry everything on medium heat in the dryer too!
