Baby Names

Bad Initials?

DH and I have decided to name our son Roman.  DH wants the baby's MN to be Anthony, after his grandfather.  And Anthony's a fine middle name to me.  Problem is, our last name begins with a "G".  So Roman's initials would be R.A.G.  Every baby naming source I've read says to be cautious of the initials.  Interestingly, DH has an uncle with RAG as his initials, and he says it's never been a problem.  Still, part of me is worried I'm setting up our son for a lifetime of ridicule.  What do you guys think?  I'm especially interested if anyone here has bad initials and if you were ever teased.  TIA!

Re: Bad Initials?

  • It's not like it's COW or AZZ or something.. I wouldn't worry about it. I actually had an uncle with those initials too and we called him Uncle Rags :)

  • I don't think RAG is ridicule-worthy, I wouldn't worry about it.

  • I think some combos are horrible, like ASS, but I don't think RAG is that bad.

DS is LEG.  I joked about it before he was born but never thought it was a big deal.

  • I think it's fine. I wouldn't worry about it. I love the name Roman, great choice!?
  • Thanks for the fast responses ladies!  I'd hoped I was just overthinking this (lol at Uncle Rag)
  • I think its fine.
  • I think it's fine.  Nice names too!

  • I don't think that is bad at all. Other kids would rarely know his middle name anyhow. I'm more worried about first/last initials. Our last name starts with "P" so all "P" names are out (to avoid PP or pee pee jokes). "T" names are out too--DH is a T name and got alot of "TP" (toilet paper) jokes.

  • That isn't bad at all.  It's not like it's _ASS or something.

If it makes you feel better, my daughter is CVS (like the pharmacy, and we call her "CVS" as a nickname now, lol) and my niece is VAG.

  • For some reason I don't think initials are as important to worry about for boys as they are girls. I think girls are the ones who really use them more, like to monogram jewelry boxes (that's the only thing I can think of to use initials on - and even on those it goes first name - last name - middle name)

  • I dont see problem w/ it
  • it could be worse ... I wouldn't worry too much about those initials.
  • I have a friend who just named her baby Roman with the initials RAG.  I wouldn't worry aobut it.

He needs to hang out with my DD then - she is ARM!

  • I don't think it is terrible but something to consider.  My initials spelled ALF, which wasn't around when I was born but I definitely got some flack for it when my friends were old enough to realize it.  i took it with a grain of salt though because I like ALF so much, it was one of my favorite shows.  Also by the time they figured it out the show wasn't on anymore.
