Double co-pay for hospital delivery?

I just got the "explanation of benefits" from my insurance company.  They're showing that I owe one copay for an in-patient stay for me, and one for my son.  That takes my responsibility from the $1,000 I was expecting, to $2,000.

Is this  normal, to have to pay for Charlie's time in the hospital as a separate person?  I'd think that as part of a delivery, he'd be covered by my payments.

Re: Double co-pay for hospital delivery?

  • Some of the medical expenses are his and some are yours. That sucks that yours are so much! We had a $200 deductible for DS is all, and everything else was covered.

  • I've never heard of this. I only had to make one copay.
  • I think that is standard practice now. I haven't gotten DD's hospital bill yet, but I am curious to see it. She roomed in with us the whole time and didn't use any formula or anything.

I see you are in Denver. Where did you deliver?

  • DS was also billed as a separate person for our in-patient portion.  My insurance company warned me about this when I asked them about what costs I could expcect.  It makes sense to me since he also had to have his own set of bloodwork, nurses to care for him, etc.
  • For our insurance DD was considered her own patient as soon as she was born, so two deductibles for us.

I delivered at St. Joe's.  You here, too?

Bummer - looks like I don't have any room to fight the insurance company on that silly  double charge.  Thank god for FSAs!!

I am!  I delivered at Lutheran, though.

Gotta love those lovely pre-tax dollars! You are lucky, though, because all of your LO's well-baby appointments will be under the same year, so you won't have to pay a second copay for those.

  • if i'm not mistaken, ours will be seperated out between me and DD as well, which is dumb, but nothing i can do about it.
  • We have 2 bills for each of us.  DD had RDS and had to be in the level 2 nursery, so I figured we would have 2 different bills.
