Babies: 0 - 3 Months

For those of you who were induced...

Could you tell me how your labor went, ie: did you end up with a c-section, how long was labor, etc.  I found out tomorrow if my Dr. wants me induced on Monday due to the baby being big and I'm freaking out!

Re: For those of you who were induced...

  • Started the induction at 2 a.m. on a Monday morning. Labored until 8:30 that night with no change in my cervix (was stuck at a fingertip).

Decided to do a c-section because things just weren't budging with the pitocin cranked up as high as it would go.

Come to find out my pelvis was way too small and there's no way Will would have fit through it. My OB also thinks that I never dilated because of scar tissue on my cervix from a laser conization I had in 2005.

  • Loading the player...
  • they gave me pitocin around 11AM, she was born at 5:21.

i originally didn't want to get an epidural, but the contractions came on very strong and pretty close together (had the epidural within 20 minutes...)

    didn't need a c-section.

    overall, everything went pretty smoothly.

  • I was induced 4 days early. I had cervidil at 2pmThursday, dr broke water at 6pm and started pitocin. Labored for a total of 28 hours and had DD at 6pm Friday. I had a successful induction and didn't end up in a csection. It was hard, but doable. Good luck!
  • I was induced at 38 weeks for pre-eclampsia. My induction was swift and easy. 7 hours of labor, a dose of stadol halfway through, and a couple of pushes and DS was out of there.
  • went in at 7am. was already 2cm when I went. Started induction at 8am. I had epidural at 11:30.  Baby was very low at 2:50. She was born at 3:12. Wonderful induction experience!
  • I was given cervadil at 6:00 PM, by 2:00 AM I was in active labor.  I got an epidural at 6:30 AM. I'm still not sure what took so long to get the epi. Induced contractions are hell with no break in between.  I think they started pitocin either right before or after my epidural.  I was full dialated by 9:30 AM but had to wait two hours for my dr to get there.  I started pushing at 11:30 AM and he was born at 12:10 PM.  I was very nervous about getting induced because of the risk of getting a csection but everything went very well for me.  GL!
  • I ended up with a c/s. I would have done things differently looking back. Remember a c section is abdominal surgery. It should only be done in case of EMERGENCY. I was in labor for 12 hours when they decided my labor "stalled" and I needed a c/s. I wish I would have waited longer as there was no threat to me or my baby.

Good luck with whatever decisions you make :) The most important thing is the health of you and your baby.

  • went in having spontaneous contractions 6-7 min apart and 3 cm dilated. I was admitted and pitocin was started a couple hrs later. (contractions slowed..and  i was scheduled to be induced for GD)

My Body did not react well to pit, small doses caused intense contrax..had to keep it on a very low dose....long story short...i labored for 30+ hours..and only dilated to 8cm. baby was having some distress and I hade a fever (water was broke 18 hrs prior) so I had a c-section . The baby was also face up..which made progression more difficult

  • My induction took a long time because I really was not very dilated or effaced (but had to be induced at 38 weeks for low amniotic fluid).  Here's how it went:

    Thursday night- Cervadil inserted

Friday morning- Contractions start, too close together to do another round of cervadil

Friday evening- contractions stop, doctor uses cytotec (similar to cervadil)

Saturday morning- more contractions, cervix soft, dilated to 3cm

Saturday noon- Epidural, then pitocin given

    Saturday 11pm- started pushing

    Sunday 12:30am- baby born.

Total time was 50 hours, but this wasn't all "labor."  Each round of cervadil/cytotec takes at least 12 hours, and for the most part that was not painful.  I did have about 14 hours of contractions before I could have the epidural, then about 10 hours of bliss after the epidural, followed by some pain when pushing.  The only thing I wish I had known was it could take this long and still be "okay."  Everyone I talked to who was induced had been OVERDUE- which meant they were ready and went a lot faster than I did!

  • I was induced with DD #1 due to being almost two weeks overdue.

Started induction around 5 am. Was progressing very slowly. Around 8 pm I still wasn't fully dilated and was showing signs of infection, likely due from my water being broke for so long. My cervix was swelling and they were going to do a c/s if they couldn't get the swelling down. Midwife had me lay in some crazy positions and swelling went down, I delivered DD vaginally at 10:04 pm - pushed for 45 minutes.

  • I was induced at 38w4d due to pre-e.  Started pitocin at 8:30 am and sat for 12 hours with painless contractions that did nothing. (was 3cm to start with)  Then at 8:30 pm (still no progress) my water broke on it's own and I went from a 3-10 in less than 2 hours and pushed for 12 minutes and DS came out.  no complications and it was a very enjoyable labor and delivery for me!

    Good luck!

Married on 3.20.2004. It took 30 month, 2 failed adoptions and IVF for our first miracle. We have had 9 foster kids since he was born and started the domestic adoption process when he was 10 month old, we had 4 failed matches in that time. After our daughter was born we brought her home and spent 2 weeks fearing we might lose her because of complications that came up. But Praise God all went through and she is ours forever! • I was induced at 41 weeks. I was in labor for 22 hours, and it ended with a c-section. My labor had stalled, and I was running a really high fever.

If you're nervous, I would make a list of questions for your doctor concerning inductions (drugs used, c-section rates, etc.).

  • Cytotec 11:00 PM Sunday night.

    Contrax started at 2:00 AM

    Pitocin at 8:30 AM

    Epidural by Noon

    Started pushing at 9:30 PM

Amelia born at 11:00 PM Monday night.

It was a full 24 hours but I was very happy that I went ahead with the induction.

Also, I was induced at 38 weeks 5 days so it was still pretty early and I managed to give birth vaginally. I was afraid that I would need a Csection since she started up so high.

  • I had the perfect labor. Started pitocin at 10am, contractions 5 min apart an not v. painful by 11. Epidural at 1 and then broke water. Started pushing at 3:45 and had her an hour later.

However, I would not have done the induction w/out progress on my own first. Your body has to be ready for it to go well.

  • They broke my water and started pitocin around 9 AM. I was fully dialted around 4:30 PM. I delivered naturally, although I did need an episitomy and the use of the vacuum (took 3 and 1/2 hrs to get him out).

I wanted to avoid being induced too. I wasn't progressing though so I really had no choice.

Not that I know any differently, but I really hope that next time around I don't have to be induced. Everyone who has more than 1 kid and was induced with at least 1 baby, all tell me that it was the worst labor out of all of them.

I hope I didn't scare you! Just get the epi and you'll be fine! :)

    GL!

  • It was easier than I ever expected it to be! Cervidil was placed at 10 p.m. My water broke at 4:30 a.m., and they monitored me until 6. My contractions were all over the place, so they started pitocin to get labor progressing. I got the epidural at 8 a.m. and I was 3cm, 95% effaced. At 9 a.m. I was fully dilated and effaced and ready to push. I had to wait on the doctor, so I didn't start pushing until 9:30. I pushed three times and her head was out. Then, I stopped pushing so the doctor could massage/stretch the perineum. At that point, the doc stepped aside, placed my husband's hands in the correct places and helped him pull her out while I pushed once more. She was born at 9:46 and I had a 2nd degree tear.

I would absolutely make the same decisions next time. Everything went very smoothly and quickly, and I was completely off pain meds within one week.

Just trust your gut, do what you think is best, and you'll be fine!!

  • Cervadill at 3:45pm, Epidural at11:30 that night, Pitosin at 4:30am, active labor started around 5am, didn't start pushing until around 9:45am, baby Colton was born at exactly 12:12pm! If I had it to do over again I wouldn't be enduced. I had pregnancy enduced hypertension and they thought before it got any worse they would just get him here 3 days early...nope...not again! With our next baby I won't be enduced unless there are major and I mean MAJOR problems! Good luck to you!
  • I should add that I was 1 cm and 50% effaced at the time of induction. I had been stuck there for 3 weeks.
  • I was induced at 40w 3d.  I was 2.5cm. when they started at 10:00PM.  Doc broke my water at 2:00 AM (I was still only 2.5cm)  I was fully dilated by 7:00 and started pushing.  I pushed for 2.5 hours and finally had Emma :)  Start to finish was about 11.5 hours.

  • I was in labor for 26 hours after being induced before they decided to do my c-section!  I hated it I wish they would have just done the c-section from the beginning, I am pretty sure everything will be fine for you! GL!
  • I was induced due to low fluid levels at 38 weeks. Within an 1hour of beginning cevridal I was in pre -e and 2 hours later I had a beautiful healthy baby girl. I dont remember much more than that.

  • Due on 10/12; admitted to be induced the morning of 10/16. Started induction around 8am on the 16th. Finally got the epidural around 1am. I didn't start dilating much until I got the epidural (I think they started pumping up the pitocin at that point). DD was born on the morning of 10/17 at 9:50am (28 hours after being admitted). The pain of contractions didnt start until late afternoon on the 16th. I was able to have her vaginally (no c-section) although she was "sunny side up" (face up). I was told after the fact that had they realized that, they would have taken me in for a c-section because it is much more difficult to push her past the pelvic bone when they are face up... GL to you!
  • Thanks for all the responses!  I feel a little better, but am keeping my fingers crossed that things will happen naturally!

  • I was induced a few days after my due date because they said I had low amniotic fluid.  They also told me they thought the baby was over 9 lbs.  I was admitted Monday afternoon and was only dilated "a nub."  They gave me prostaglandin gel overnight which hardly did a thing.

Tuesday they put me on pitocin, by that night I was maybe 3cm dilated.  They tried some med that is FDA approved for ulcers but starts contractions.  Did that overnight without success.

Wednesday back on pitocin and far heavier dose.  By 3pn the pain was too much, water had yet to be broken (and doc couldn't get it to break) and still only 3cm so I ended up with an epidural.

Once I had the epidural, things began to progress.  Water broke on its own and it had meconium in it.  Dilated to 5cm.  They decided to have me push due to the meconium.  Baby stuck behind pelvic bone so they decided to try forceps, figuring that a c-section would be needed.

Forceps worked, baby was born Thursday morning at 5:35 am.

FYI, after they realized my amniotic fluid was just fine - the cord can confuse things on a sonogram.  Also baby was only 7 lbs, 9 oz - she just had a big head which made them think she was going to be so large.  I wish I had been allowed to let nature take its course... she probably would have been born the same day, just with less stress to her and me the days prior.  Oh well, ended up with a healthy and happy baby!  That's the most important thing!

  • I was induced when I was 10 days overdue and only a fingertip dilated.  I went in at 6am, was all hooked up to the monitors by 10-11am and they broke my water.  Things got painful around 2, I got my epidural, and started to push at around 6.  Will was born about 25 minutes later.

It really wasn't bad except that at one point a nurse came in and asked me if I was in any pain.  I told her not yet and she said "Oh, we'll take care of that!" and jacked up the pitocin.  She may actually have been the devil in scrubs.  I was happy to be induced though - I knew I would finally have the baby!

  • My induction started at 7:00 a.m. and I delivered the next morning at 1:51 a.m.!  It was a very long day, but I was glad they let me continue to labor.

My advice is not to put too much stock into the size thing, they kept estimating that my DD was going to be 9 to 10 pounds.  She was 7 lbs 3 oz, and perfectly fine.

My best piece of advice, if you do get to 10 cm, see if the doctor will let you "labor down" until the baby is clear in +4 station and right there.  I only pushed for a little over 30 minutes.

     Good luck to you.
