Ideal Placenta Location?

So, all I can see is the "difficult" placenta location discussions when I search.  What is the ideal position?  Mine was on the right side this morning at our ultrasound.  Baby is head down with his spine to my left and facing my right side and the placenta was right in front of his face (making some of the 3D face shots the sonographer tried to take somewhat difficult!)

Re: Ideal Placenta Location?

  • I'd guess it's anywhere but over the cervix or in front.  Having an anterior placenta isn't bad though, just frustrating because it takes longer to feel kicks.

  • According to my OB (I asked because mine is anterior, but luckily high), the ideal location is posterior, centered, and up high.

The worst thing is placenta previa, obviously.  A total coverage, and some partial coverages, require C-section.  Sometimes placentas can move, though.

My OB says that as long as the placenta isn't previa, it really doesn't matter where it is... though anterior placentas can cause back labor, which I am not looking forward to... Tongue Tied

  • Best place is somewhere in the general belly area.

I know!  I'm scared!!!  He said it doesn't necessarily mean you're going to have back labor, but it increases the odds, since baby will most likely come out sunny-side up instead of facing down like s/he's supposed to.  Boo...
