Heartbroken... 1st birthday problem

The boys will have GJ tubes in their bellies by the end of this week.  Because of this they can not eat anything by mouth (or so I have been told) because the tube is an obstruction and they would not be able to pass anything from their stomach into their intestines like normal as it may cause a serious blockage.

How are they supposed to enjoy their first birthday cake?  I'm so upset.  It didn't even occur to me until I was oohing and aahing over MHop's post of Campbell's adorable 1st Birthday pics.   I feel like for us it will be another "first" moment that will be lost.

Re: Heartbroken... 1st birthday problem

  • That's a bummer.

It probably won't make you feel any better but Olivia didn't eat birthday cake on her first (or second) birthday either.   We did make one for her and then tried to get her to put her fingers in it.  And then we washed her hands and that was it.

You could try that.   It would still make for a good picture.

Your poor thing - I'm sorry.

  • I'm sorry :(
Ditto PP though, maybe you can make them cakes and let them smash them and maybe they can lick their fingers?

  • I'm sorry you have to miss this.  I just fought back tears at a 1st b-day party yesterday watching the b-day boy tear apart his cake.  I still feel robbed of several things as I'm sure everyone here does.  Then I look at my beautiful boy and watch him do something silly and I can get past it.

Looking forward to some b-day pics!!  HUGS!

  • Did the doctors tell you nothing by mouth? Robbie had an NJ tube for a while in the NICU and he was still able to take some meds by mouth. (he was still intubated at the beginning of it, so he wasn't eating, but that was what finally got him off the vent and then he took some of his meds orally because they were too strong to go straight into his intestines so he had to take them orally.)

Yeah, they said there may be some things, mostly small quantities of liquids and meds, but that pretty much the GJ tube and the NJ tube are obstructions and we would complicate things by adding food into the stomach for digestion.  I will ask again tomorrow about this one first birthday event, but I'm pretty sure they 'll say no.

  • I'm not really certain about how long they are anticipating having the tubes, but I was thinking that you could do as the PP suggested for their birthday, but then have more of the experience you are hoping for in celebration of their adjusted Birthday ... your due date.  Or perhaps the anniversary of the date you brought them home?  This would buy you more time (if they think the tubes would come out by then).
  • I guess that makes sense but man it sucks. I'm so sorry.
  • i'm so sorry. ?it sucks. you've lost so much from your preemie experience and i know you'd like to out it behind you. ?i'll help brainstorm...let's think of another way for them to celebrate this milestone.
  • That just sucks and makes me feel so sad. ?As a mom we look forward to these things more than our babies ever will. ?I am so sorry you are going through this. ?Any idea how long the tubes will be in? ?PP had some good ideas. ?Sending hugs your way!

  • Oh no honey! Oh no :(

    Godda@mn that's not fair.

We'll have to come up with a fun alternative. Maybe they can have an ice cream cake, where instead of ice cream you use the pediasure or formula that goes into their tubes, with frosting on top?

Sending lots of love and well wishes your way!

  • Hmph.  Like PP, make the cake(s) and let them play with it if possible for a photo op, but then maybe you can focus on the other fun parts of a first birthday?  Like gifts - give them a box of kleenex to unwrap (apparently that is fun for them to pull out one by one), maybe some music or whatever it is that puts a smile on.

  • oh that just flippin sux, we are going to have to put our minds together and figure something out!  what about something like this:

i see this one is sold out, but you can use the idea & maybe have some small toys that they like inside??

    HUGS

    You've been through so much.

  • I'm so sorry...it's just not fair.  I really liked PP's suggestion of doing the cake on their due date, or on their going-home anniversary.  Another poster suggested an ice cream cake, which is a good idea too.

Maybe you can sit them side by side and let them dig their hands into a cake and get some cute shots of them touching each other with messy hands, etc?

  • Oh, no, I am so sorry.  These boys (and you) have been through so much.  You're all in my thoughts so much of the time.
  • I'm sorry:( Ditto the pp - can you have them mash it up with their hands and make a mess? Still a cute picture...I went to a 1st b-day this weekend and the birthday girl likes touching the cake but had no interest in actually eating it. If not, then next birthday will be a new 1st - their 1st birthday cake (2nd birthday).
  • I am so sorry. That just sucks! You might just have to do a fake cake for pictures, you dont want to risk them licking their fingers or trying to eat it if they aren't supposed to. Then as soon s they are able to eat again give them both the biggest cake you have ever seen and let them dive into it to make up for it.

Celebrate their birthday in other ways. How about a big huge messy bubble bath instead of a big messy cake. I don't know how the tubes work, can they get wet?

I'm sorry I will try to think of some other ideas for you.

I just checked out that etsy cake and OMG it is so cute! ?That is a really creative alternative.?

  • Laura,

I posted on your blog but just wanted to say again how sorry I am that our celebration caused you any pain.  I hope that some of these other suggestions work out and you are able to enjoy their first birthdays....

Please oh please don't think of your celebration for C as paining me! On the contrary, it made me very happy to see her having such a great time. I love the pics and the videos are just freakin' adorable.  She was having such a wonderful time.  It really hit me a while afterward when I started thinking that I really need to light a fire under my butt to get the coordination for my guys party going. The first thing I thought about was the invitations, and then I though "gee, I wonder what kind of cake they will grow up liking?  Chocolate or vanilla?" and then it hit me that they wouldn't be able to eat it.

The GI resident said she'd talk to the Specialist today about it and I haven't heard back from them.  I'm thinking I will make the totally hypo allergen free cake and icing from Cherrybrook Kitchen and just let them lick their fingers.  My DH pointed out that they generally don't put stuff in their mouths anyway.  I'll be the one hovering in the pictures with a washcloth in hand ready to strike if I see an errant hand wandering towards a slobbery mouth, LOL!
