Breasts not producing milk?

I used to get 5 oz while pumping...

and then it went to 3 oz.

Now, I'm barely getting 1 oz after pumping from both breasts!

WTH is happening? I feel like I'm a failure.

Re: Breasts not producing milk?

  • I was having the same problem and then started taking Fenugreek and my supply is increasing again.  You just have to make sure you don't miss a feeding or pumping.

  • If you're nursing full time, 1/2 to 1 oz is normal for pumping -- you probably got more early on before your body adjusted to what your baby actually needed. This has good info: https://www.kellymom.com/bf/supply/low-supply.html

  • Did you get your period? Are you drinking enough water? ?My supply tanked and I had tried everything. ?I ended up with Reglan.?

I am going through the same exact problem. I feel like a failure as a mother that I cannot provide enough milk for my baby.

I didn't look at DD's age, but it is very likely it's your body adjusting. ?When are you pumping in relation to nursing?

I get so upset with myself...I now have to supplement with formula and I hate that! (Not that there is anything wrong with formula feeding, it's just not what I had intended on doing).

I'm not nursing, just pumping. From day one, even with a lactation consultant, DD would not latch. We continue to try, but she refuses to latch and proceeds to scream until given a bottle...

I got it at GNC.  I take 2 capsules 3x a day.  Only side effect is it makes me smell like syrup when I sweat.  No big deal to me - just makes me crave waffles.

  • Are you an EP's? ?When my supply tanked I got so upset and felt the same about formula, the stress caused more havoc on my supply. ?Talk to your dr about Reglan it's well worth it and I went from supplementing to meeting DD's needs and built a bit of a freezer stash.?

Thanks for the advice. I go to the Dr on friday. I'll be sure to ask!

  • I am no expert, but one thing I have noticed is that I get hardly any milk when I am stressed.  just a thought - see if you can do anything to reduce stress.  Plus, as pp said, you are likely no longer engorged and producing less milk.  Good luck!

  • same here... though i never got more then 1.5 oz for first pump of the day, then it goes down from there.

When i asked my OB about it, he basically said there is no proven herb or drug to help boost supply, only to reduce it...So he said he was sorry to hear that, and said to formula feed.  Some people it just doesn't work out for.

Meh.  I still manage to get A bottle a day "maybe" of my milk to give her, otherwise i FF

  • Ashley,

I am having the same problem.   I am going to try the Fenugreek and talk to my OB about Reglan.  I sooo wanted to breastfeed and we have had the same problem with latching on and she gets so frustrated and upset and starts screaming and crying because she is hungry and then I start crying because I feel like such a failure.  I thought I could make it happen by EPing, but unfortunately I am not making enough milk and have been having to supplement with formula and it sucks.  Hang in there and if you find something that works, please let me know!
