Karo syrup not working...

went to Pedi yesterday because DS is constipated and she told us to use Karo twice a day. So far we have done that 4 times and nothing. If you did this how long did it take? Any other suggestions?

Re: Karo syrup not working...

  • He may just be REALLY backed up.  I would try to stimulate him to poop using a rectal thermometer then continue on with the Karo syrup.  This seems obvious, but if you use the thermometer, you have to leave it in place until he pushes it out. Yeah...gross...I've been there and done that a few times now :(

  • Also try rubbing his tummy lightly in a clockwise direction for a little while and bicycle legs. It gets it going a little.

  • Please be careful with how much you give. If a baby is given too much, diarrhea can happen, which obviously puts your baby at risk for dehydration. FWIW, my DD's pedi doesn't recommend Karo syrup.

    I found this interesting:

"In the past, concern has been raised about whether corn syrup is a source of bacterial spores that produce Clostridium botulinum bacteria. These bacteria are typically harmless to older children and adults. But when ingested by an infant, these bacteria make a toxin that can cause infant botulism.

According to a 2006 report from the American Academy of Pediatrics, manufacturers of corn syrups can't guarantee that their products are free of these bacterial spores. However, there have never been any cases of infant botulism directly linked to corn syrup. Still, corn syrup isn't intended or recommended as a treatment for infant constipation."

  • It took about 24 hours but I put a tsp in each bottle until he went.
  • One thing I have done is the Fleet baby enema...the glycerin liquid is the one I used. Once I did, DD pooped within 30 seconds.

Now...I give DD 1 tsp of Miralax daily...first bottle of the day and she has pooped for me every day now! I totally suggest both of these!

  • i would just keep trying this as well as a rectal thermometer...put vaseline on the end or if you have the caps so it goes in smoothly.  my lo almost poops all the time when i do this...you of course have to leave it in there for a while.  i usually just take my lo's temp...if he hasn't pooped by the time the beep goes off it's not going to happen!  my pedi also recommended 1/2 oz prune juice to 4 oz bottle.  good luck i know this is terrible to see them go through!
  • My dad's g/f is a NICU nurse and they always put pear juice in the bottle if a baby is constipated. She recommended this to my SIL when one of my nephews was constipated and I guess it worked really well. You might want to try that instead of the Karo syrup.
  • how much does the miralax work?
