Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Reflux Moms...Question

DS has been on Prevacid for almost 3 weeks now and was doing great.  I can still hear stuff coming up in his throat and he swallows it back most of the time (silent reflux), but will spit up from time to time now, too. The key difference is that it doesn't bother him after getting on the meds. BUT, he got his 2 month shots on Thursday (he's 10 weeks) and, since then, he has been acting like the reflux is bothering him again (fussy, I can hear stuff coming up more often, and he is having a hard time after feedings again).  Coincidence? It's so frustrating.  We had a pretty content baby for a couple weeks and now he is mr. fussy pants again and it's hard to see him upset again.

Re: Reflux Moms...Question

  • DS had a bad reflux flare up after his 2 month shots. The Pedi upped his meds. It got better for a few weeks and then his reflux peaked. We switched to Prevacid and he now has Alimentum with oatmeal cereal added. He seems to be a different baby.

  • DD was just put on Zantac. Her ped. said if it works for a couple weeks, then seems to stop, it may be because of her growth. In that case, she'll need to be reweighed and have her dosage changed. I don't know how Prevacid works, but if it has a strict dosage then maybe your DS has grown out of it? I'd call your ped. and see if he needs to be reevaluated.?
  • Hmm...I guess I should mention that DS is EBF'd, so switching formula isn't an option for us :( He is already on 15 mg. of prevacid, so I am sure the dosing is ok.  Or could it not be?

  • Thats the dose DS is on. He also gets 1.3 mL of Zantac at night. How much does your DS weigh? How long has he been on Prevacid?
  • He weighs 13.5lbs and has been on Prevacid for almost 3 weeks.  It was working so well until after his shots.

  • I would call first thing in the morning. See if maybe they want to switch meds or try something different. In the meantime I would stick with frequent feedings and less ounces. I wonder what it is about the shots that cause a flareup. DS was much better after his 4 month shots.
