How did you get rid of the paci?

Was it gradual or all at once?  Did you make a big deal about giving them to new babies, or did a paci fairy come take it?  I'm not sure how to handle this, but it's becoming more obvious to me that this is impeding her speech.

DD doesn't take it at daycare (FT M-F), but asks for it as soon as we pick her up and takes it on the weekends.  If I ask her to take it out she will, but will ask for it again a few minutes later.  Occasionally she'll forget about it for a couple of hours, but that's not the norm.

Re: How did you get rid of the paci?

  • DS was young, so we didn't make a big deal about it. ?I accidently left his in H's car (who was out), so I just didn't give it to him that night, and he was fine! ?Never had is since. ?

  • DS only got his paci in his crib for naps and bedtime and occasionally in the car.  I took it away at 15 months.  I originally cut the very tip of one of his pacis off (and got rid of all the other pacis that were around).  The first day, he still wanted it.  For nap he mildly fussed for about 5 minutes or less.  At bedtime he cried for about an hour.  On day 2, he got mad and threw it (actually, he chucked it) across the room.  I told him that he obviously didn't want it anymore if he could throw it across the room.  That was it, he never saw it again.  We just had to let him CIO at bedtime.  It wasn't that bad though.  Night two he cried for 20 minutes or less, night 3 for about 8 minutes.  Good luck!

  • I'm mean and just took it. She kept biting holes in them and I was tired of buying them. I didn't say anything to her and gave her other things to chew on (b/c my dumb ass realized she might be teething) and distracted her if she whined for it. She was fine w/in a week. Anyway, I think making a production of it sometimes makes it harder.

  • It was gradual, first is was 'bink stays in the bed" then it was "bink only at nap" (not night), then it was no bink... it was only about a week total though. It was REALLY easy for us.
  • It was gradual for us.  We started by limiting it to the crib which meant he only got it during naps and bedtime.  Once we had done that he was ok but he started chewing on them around the time he turned two (two year molars and other chewing) so we removed any that had damage to them over the course of a few weeks and eventually there were none left.  It took him a couple of days to get used to not having a paci but he's been fine since then.

  • DS was 2.5 yrs old when we took his away completely.  He had already stopped using it during the day but was still using it for naps and bedtime.  We just decided to do it cold turkey one day and he whined for it a little the first few weeks but overall he was fine with it.  It surprised me that it never once interfered with his sleeping pattern. I guess I was expecting the worrst but in the end it wasn't a bad experience at all.
  • We talked about it leading up to the big take away.  I told him that they were for babies and that he was becoming a big boy and didn't need it anymore.  He was about 22 months old when we took it.  It only took about three solid days for him to get over it...it was MUCH easier than I had anticipated.  I just put him to bed one night without it...he cried for a few minutes and went to sleep without it.  The next day I didn't give it to him at naptime...or at bedtime.  Each time he asked for it/cried about it less.  By day 3 it was gone and a non issue.
