Hi, I'm out of lurk mode because today I got news that I have to have a scheduled c-section due to polyhydramnios. My doctor said that I don't have an extreme over abundance of amniotic fluid, but that I am measuring big and do have a bit more amniotic fluid than I should. I'm worried because I read that sometimes this means that the baby has some kind of genetic disorder or congenital problem. I've had numerous ultrasounds due to 4 miscarriages in the past and I had to see a perinatologist in my second trimester who also did 3 ultrasounds and everything came out great. My last biophysical was today and so far the baby looks good. Did anyone else have this problem and have a healthy baby? I'm really worried......
but I figure my doctor would tell me something was wrong with the baby. His main concern was that I would go into preterm labor. Any info would be greatly appreciated... Thanks.
Re: Polyhydramnios???
THANK YOU!!!! My c-section is scheduled for Feb. 23rd. I was so scared when I read about the genetic/congenital problems. Google is good but bad at the same time. It'll scare the heck out of you if you let it......
I had it. I measured 2 weeks ahead since 24 weeks. They thought it was a big baby, but it was polyhydramnios. It was diagnosed at 37 weeks. According to the perinat, it was A LOT of fluid and it kept increasing. My ultrasounds were always fine and so were my NSTs. I was induced at 40 weeks because of it (afraid of my water breaking). I too was very nervous. I have a VERY healthy little boy who is perfect!
My cousin also had this with both of her pregnancies and has 2 healthy little girls who are also perfect.
just remember there is a 60% chance that nothing is wrong. The stats show that only 40% of the time something is wrong with the baby and 20% of that is serious. The other 20% is something minor. What got me through those last weeks was knowing those stats and that all of my ultrasounds were great.
I don't blame you for being freaked. it's not like it's a common thing to happen to women, so there aren't a lot of stories to calm your nerves. I hope everything goes well. Make sure to come back and update us after you have your baby!
Wow! 52 weeks??? I think I'm just measuring one week ahead or two. He didn't tell me today how much ahead I was measuring and I didn't ask because when he said "scheduled c-section" my mind went a little blank. Your post made me feel so much better, and yes, I've had tons and tons of ultrasounds so I would think my doc would've said "Look, there's a problem with the baby". Again, a HUGE thank you.....
Thank you. Well, my baby is a little big also. So far, my ultrasounds are great and everything seems fine, so that gives me a modicum of comfort. It's comforting to hear of others that have been through this and turned out fine.....

Thank you!!! You're right, it is uncommon. Only 1% of pregnancies have this, however I'm glad to know that others have been through this and turned out ok.
My best friend had polyhydramnios also. She was measuring 4 weeks ahead and went into labor a week before her scheduled c/s. Her fluid level was 22cm, I believe. Her baby was born healthy and over 9lbs. Try not to worry, easier said than done, right.
I had the exact opposite. Oligohydramnios, which I still have not found one person on the boards that had it also. My fluid level was below 4cm and I was induced immediately upon finding out the level-37 weeks. DD had some complications from being squished in my tummy with no room to swim, but all have just about resolved themselves. Babies are extremely resilient.
Good luck to you!
Thank you! Wow, these conditions are rare! But you guys are making me feel better. I'm hoping and praying that all is well. Again, a huge thank you!
I had the opposite with DS #1. I was scared because of the risk of death due to cord compression ect. I was sent to the hospital when it was discovered but luckily I was already contracting regularly.
Sounds like you got good advice from others so hopefully your mind is at ease. Best of luck to you!
