HEAD SHAPE

my baby is getting a slight flat spot on her right side as she favors this side....mostly when sleeping. i am trying to position her to the other side and she keeps rolling back. i am really worried this will cause a problem with her skull closing too quickly........what can i do?

in the nicu they ALWAYS

had her on her tummy.

Re: HEAD SHAPE

  • crazy nest...a million posts. ?oh well. ?DS had a similar situation. ?i just tried to ?turn his head the other way as much as possible. ?i turned his body the other way in the crib so that he had to look the other way to see his rainforest thing. ?it evened out on it's own...but i kept trying.
  • We laid DD in her crib in the opposite direction.  Eventually, it evened out.
  • Loading the player...
  • DS had a mirror in his crib and I would switch it from side to side.  He LOVED to look at himself so he would turn his head.

  • DD has a bit of a flat spot on her right side, too.

We put a mirror on the left side of her cradle.  She naps in her crib (cradle in our room where she sleeps for now; crib in her room) and I sit in there and work while she sleeps, so I lay her so that she has to turn to the left to watch her mobile.

She's also starting to support her head, so we've had her "up" more and not in her bouncy seat while playing.  When we're holding her so that she's laying down, we try to angle her.

  • DS favored his left side. It is hard to keep them positioned especially when the start to be able to roll. Just try when ever possible to have her look left. In the carseat, bouncy, or other chairs use blankets to prevent turning. I found it harder in the crib or cradle to control which way he layed. I never really noticed the flat part but EVERYONE else saw it. It went away as his head grew.

  • Continue repositioning as much as possible, and when she's awake trick her into looking the unfavored way.  DS had plagiocephaly (flat spot on the back-right side) and is being treated with a helmet right now (he's been wearing it for 6 weeks), due to the plagio he ended up with slight torticollis.  Fortunately the torticollis is now gone, we've done a few daily stretches and it helped tremendously.

If you have more questions regarding plagio or treatment, please page me here.  I'm mostly on in evenings, 6-12 board moves to fast for me to see a page there :)

GL!  Definitely mention it to her pedi at your next well-baby check up.  If it becomes severe, optimal time to start treatment is between 4-6 months.
