DD holding back poop for 1 week!

Boy this girl is stubborn! We have been on stool softners all week and I just gave her the 3rd does of a laxative and NOTHING!!!  She is complaining of a belly ache so I dont think she can hold out much longer, poor thing.

Anyone have any experience with this and how long can she go until I get worried?  We are being monitored by her DR but she is not in the office again until Sunday and I will be a basket case if she doesnt poo by then.

I am getting really woried over here.

Re: DD holding back poop for 1 week!

  • Is it a potty training issue?  Or just a pooping issue in general?
  • try oatmeal cereal w/kayro syrup works for my muchkin

  • You could do an enema.  Sucks, but it sure gets it out.

Don't let it go too far.  We're seeing a GI about this.  He held back enough and got constipated enough that he stretched out his colon.  So, now it hurts.  He won't poop on the potty (he's 3 1/2 - and it wasn't a pt issue to begin with).  He's on Miralax everyday.  Suffice it to say, nip this in the bud.

  • A pooping issue in general. She is fully trained.

She had a rough go the last time and bled a little. I think she is scared for it to hurt again (cant blame her)!

I guess I am just worried that this is carrying on too long and I would hate to run into a crisis. It is compounded that she had a nasty flu this week...on the bright side, at least there is not much new stuff backing up since she hasnt really eaten all week.

    This poor little thing!

  • What about a suppository?

Thanks! How long did he hold??

  • The first time he did it, it was maybe 3 days?  But, then it became a thing for him to try to hold it in, rather than push.  Even now, on miralax, he claims it hurts (and it may very well) and "I no do hurtie poopies on potty."  At this point, it's starting to be an excuse and he's bribed up to his ears to go on the potty, because it's getting old...

tried that and it is the only thing she has pooped out all week.  I put it in and it came flying back out at me.  It was kind of funny but she wont hold it long enough and that is why I have held off this long with the enema.

Thanks for all the great tips! The Dr said she would go eventually but I dont want her causing any real damage and I am trying not to force her to sit on the potty. Everything I have read tells me not to and DH is not really on board.  I have to go out tonight and I am afraid he is going to undo all my careful 'suggesting but not forcing' techinque I have been using all week. He means well but the man doesnt really get it in this department. He wants her to poop now so she should poop now. I get the instinct as I want to make her go too but I am trying hard not to freak her out.

    Oi.

  • Definitely something to talk with your dr about further if this continues.  My daughter has encopresis, which is where she holds her bms for so long, that she ends up having leakage and accidents in her pants. (She was toilet trained).  For her it is a psychological problem that started because of an anal fissure and has gotten way out of hand.  We are doing treatment now with a GI and a child psychologist and have a long road ahead of us.  She has lost sensation and function of her bowels because of this and like pp said, her colon is stretched out.  I totally agree with PP saying to nip this while you can.  My dd has been on Miralax twice daily for 10 months, and in December she was dx with encopresis and started treatment.  Hopefully just a fluke for your dd this week, but if not, follow up as this can quickly get out of hand.
