fruit and cold sores

I *think* I've figured out why Jake gets cold sores... if he eats too much acidic stuff they pop up. One night he had an orange, the next morning he had one...

We've stopped letting him have oranges and grapes (dunno about this one?), and tomatoes is there anything else you think might be acidic?

Re: fruit and cold sores

  • Pineapple, I swear I get them from it. Also, if he is out in the cold or sun for long periods of time.

  • oh yes! Pineapple-- thank you!

Being out for long periods of time causes it too?? Weird... wonder why/how?

  • You know cold sores are a virus right?
  • Yes, the herpes simplex virus (I believe...) but for Jake these foods trigger it and make the sores appear. So does stress (like teething) and fever (hense the AKA: fever blisters)
  • I know it's a virus, we always have it in our system but it is triggered by certain things. Stress, extreme sun, wind, or cold for long time periods. I always get one after skiing or when I return from warm climate vacations. I knew my wedding stress would cause one and sure enough that morning I started getting one.

Luckily, I have a prescription for Valtrax and start taking it at the first sign of one and they never usually fully form. Too bad kids are too little to take it.
