Would you wake your toddler at 4:30am for an airline flight?

We are thinking of going to Myrtle beach in June. We have a time share out there. The time that we can go is very limited. We want to use some cancelled airline tickets from last year too, so that limits us as well.

The departure flight is at 7am and the airport is an hour away. I would have to get Preston up at 4:30, in order to leave the house by 5, to make it to the airport an hour early (his normal wake up time is 8:30am).

Would you do this?

Note: he is not a groggy waker upper either. He would be fully awake, no matter what time I got him up. So staying alseep on our way to the airport will probably not be happening.

  • Why not? You kind of have to, don't you? While my son has routines, I'm not a slave to them. We drove 10 hours to San Diego this summer, and I had to wake DS at about that time. He was up for a while, but eventually fell asleep.

  • Yes, I would.

  • Yes, we actually have done it.  Madelyn does not go back to sleep either, and will not sleep on the plane.  She's usually pretty excited, so she is not grumpy about it.
  • I don't know.  SIL found super cheap tickets to come out for a visit but the only time was where we'd have to wake DS up that early.  I was too afraid as DS is like your's and is wide awake once woken.  I was afraid he'd be a terror so we didn't go.  Then again I get mad at myself for just not dealing with it and missing out on opportunities.  I wish I could be more like Matt Logelin and how he takes his daughter all over the world with him!

  • Yes.  If it's the best flight and the best deal, I would take it.  My DD doesn't have a hard time getting back on schedule, though.

  • Yep...and have.

It is the best deal and the best flight (one way), where as the other's have a stop. Preston doesn't have a hard time getting back on schedule either. I don't know why I worry about it so much.

  • Totally.  We had to wake our little girl up at 3(ish) am to leave for hawaii.  It ended up being a 20 hour travel day for her and she was a CHAMP!  Not one single tear the whole day.  I was so proud of her!

We like routine but aren't strict to a schedule.  We've always been super flexible with both our girls.

  • Yep!

He wouldn't hesitate to wake YOU up at 4:30am, would he? ;)

In all seriousness...I think he'll be fine.  Have fun!

  • Ummm, yeah.  I have no idea why someone wouldn't.  I woke the kids at 4am to go to the Dominican Republic.  They were fine.

  • Just did this last month for our trip to Aruba and DD was fine! She was up and not grumpy! If it's the best deal, go for it!!

    Have fun!

  • Yup, I sure would.

  • Yes, I just did this on Sunday.  Woke both kids up at 4am and caught at 7am flight.  It worked out fine but it was a long day.  Exhausting but worth it.
  • Yes I would. We don't plan flights around DS's schedule we go for the best deal/flight.

  • yes I would absolutely wake him up.  Kids need to learn to adapt and have change to their schedule and getting up early for something is just a part of life sometimes:)
  • I had two twice last summer. It worked out fine. She didn't even fall asleep in the car on the 1 hour ride to the airport.

I had her sleep in yoga pants and a Tshirt so I didn't have to change her clothes when we left.

  • Yes, they will adapt and it's only one day.  It may be brutal, but we always go for the cheaper flights.

  • Yes.  We've had the girls up at 5 am for flights.  They actually done amazingly well getting up early.  Even on our last trip where Evelyn didn't sleep more than than 3 hours after spending the evening in the ER.

  • yes. i'd put him in warm pj's and wold not bother changing him until we get to the airport or even until we board the plane. I'd wake him 1 minute before we have to leave the house, just grab him and go.

    We've done that before.

  • We did when we went to the Bahamas.  We were up at 4:30am for a 7am flight.  It was OK and it made him sleep well on our second flight.  I would do it again.
