2nd Trimester

Interesting advice from a friend...

A friend of mine who has 2 young children told me not to bother trying to match the baby's things (swing, bouncer, etc.) to the decor of my home.  She said that she went that route and her babies didn't really like the ones she picked out (like the swing).

The thought of matching the baby's things to my home decor has honestly never even crossed my mind.

    Me neither!

  • It never crossed my mind that my baby would care. Seriously? How does she know her baby likes or doesn't like the patterns she picked out?

I picked a PNP that blended with (not matched) my decor, as opposed to bright jungle patterns or something. I don't think it's that weird, because it will be in our living room and bedroom.

Car seat, though? That's a little obsessive.

  • NDwife07- I think it was more of her wanting to match her decor so the baby stuff will blend in better but I'm not sure.  I just thought it was odd that anyone would try and match their decor for the swing or bouncer.
  • I guess if the decor in my house was rain forest and aquarium themed then I would have been good to go.

I have never even heard of trying to match items with the decor!

  • That seems like way too much work LOL!

  • okay, I'm guilty of this.  But I really did it after I found the one I liked on gracobaby.com and picked from the 6 colors it was offered in.
  • My doctor's office is aquariumed theme, we could just move all the baby stuff there. :O) ?Yeah, this is definitely not something that crossed my mind with the exception of bedding, carpeting, window treatment and wall color, which is pretty standard when decorating any room.
  • When possible I totally choose things that go with our existing decor.  We live in a small home, so it's not like I have a place to stash larger baby things when they aren't in use--and honestly, some baby things can be really garish.

Plus our house is an open plan, meaning LR, DR, Kitchen are all open to each other.  I chose a high chair pattern that blends as much as possible to our existing furniture because it's an item that will always be visible.  Same is true for our nursery.

We're choosing furniture that's the same finish as most of the furniture in our home so that we can repurpose/rearrange as needed things like bookshelves, dressers, etc.

I would also choose a swing/bouncer/pack n play that was more muted than cartoony too.  I mean, aside from the item having the features you want, you won't know if your child likes the actual item until they use it, so choosing it based on color scheme seems as good a criterion as any.  You never know, baby may just not like to swing/bounce/etc. and even if you'd bought the cartoony one, they still wouldn't like it.
