Can I make pancakes without eggs?

I have pancake mix and I see right on the box that I am "supposed" to use one egg. How would they turn out if I didn't use and egg? DS is allergic to eggs, is there something else I can use? Or can I just skip it?

Re: Can I make pancakes without eggs?

  • I would say just try it without the eggs, maybe add a pinch of baking soda to help them rise and let the batter mix set for like 5 minutes.

  • I buy a mix that you don't need to add eggs.  But that would make me think there would be eggs in the mix.  I have had pancakes made w/ beer not water, so I would think you could replace the eggs with beer.

Bet that doesn't help you AT ALL.

  • Not sure how it will turn out. But there is pancake mix out there that does not involve using eggs.
  • Can he have the yolk?  We made some this past weekend with just a yolk, they turned out ok. If he can't, you could try some applesauce or mashed up banana as a replacement.

  • FLUFFY EGGLESS PANCAKES
    1 cup all-purpose flour
    1 teaspoon sugar
    1 teaspoon cinnamon
    2 teaspoon baking powder
    1 cup whole milk
    1 tablespoon vegetable oil
    1 tablespoon water
    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    2 tablespoon butter
Combine dry ingredients and mix slightly. Add milk, oil, water, and vanilla. Whisk together until just combined. Be careful not to over mix - it should still be slightly lumpy. Set aside to rest for a few minutes.

Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat until hot. While pan is heating, add butter. As soon as the butter is melted, add melted butter to pancake batter.

Return pan to stove and stir butter into batter.

When pan is hot, with a measuring cup or ladle, pour 1/4 cup of batter into the skillet for each pancake.

Cook until bubbles form on the surface. Carefully flip pancakes with turner/spatula and cook until golden brown.

Note: This recipe also works well with whole wheat flour. Chopped fruit, nuts or chocolate chips can be added to batter before cooking for a unique treat.

  • You can also use flax seed as an egg substitute. I use Hodgson Mill milled flax seed- 1 tablespoon flax plus 3 tablespoons water replaces 1 egg. They turn out fabulous! HTH
  • Add a little baking powder to the mix.  If you have any flax seed mix it with a little water and let it stand for a minute or too and use that as a replacement.  Yogurt also works as an egg replacer.
  • Thanks everyone! I think I'm going to make my LO some pancakes tomorrow.

  • I believe that eggs are the binding agent, so they will fall apart w/o eggs
