This morning I got a call from the perinatologist's office and said that they could fit me in this morning at 11:15. I said YES! DH, Audrey, and I went and had an ultrasound done of the twins. The good news....we are having two boys! The bad news is...one of them has cysts on his head which is an indicator for trisomy 18. Healthy babies do sometimes have this though. About 1% of healthy babies have this indicator but then they turn out to be fine. Not such good odds to go off of but we are hopeful.
Of course I cried a lot. I know that it is not my fault but I couldn't help but feel like I'm doing something wrong. DD has a hole in her heart and just had surgery for her grade 4 urinary reflux and I felt like I wasn't doing something right for this other baby as well. I'm trying not to let my mind go there too much though since the other baby seems to be doing fine and this could possibly turn out to be nothing for the other baby.
Surgery and this news is just a lot to deal with at the moment. We are doing fine though.
It does make me not want to buy two of anything...
Re: Good and bad news
i'm sorry you didn't get all good news, but hopefully it turns out to be nothing.
congrats on your boys!
How to tell my boys apart
The different types of twins and triplets
Jack, Sydney and Carynne, Annaleigh, JW, Eden...forever in our hearts.
My blog * We made the national news!
We had this one our DD too, and it was scary to hear, but she came out perfectly normal. apparently it's quite common and benign. She's fine so far! On the next big (i forget when, 18 weeks or 21 weeks?) ultrasound, they'll check that DC opens and closes her fists etc and other signs hopefully indicating that everything else is on target.
Hi--I'm bored and lurking today but I've had some experience with this.I take it they're choroid plexus cysts???? If there are no other indicators (heart problems, other issues) it's probably nothing. They showed up on my u/s at 19 weeks and at the time the doctor was very reassuring (after all, no one wants to hear that "there is something up with your baby's brain") and said that without any of the other markers it was most likely something that would just go away, and usually it goes away by 28 weeks. Sure enough, we went back for another u/s at 29 weeks and she was fine. Apparently they show up in approx. 3% of u/s's and in those 3% over 90% of them go away by 28 weeks. They should have better explained things to you. Also, I googled choroid plexus cysts and while googling is usually bad, I found out a lot. They should send you for a level II u/s if they didn't do one already to check him out a bit further. Try not to worry too much at this point--he's most likely fine!!!!!
Oh--I forgot to mention....apparently these have always been around but u/s machines weren't good enough to pick them up until recently so it's something that was never an issue until now because no one really knew about them.
Well congrats on the boys and it turns out to be nothing. You all will be in my prayers. Just stay strong! I know it's hard especialy with the way your emotions are right now.
try not to worry! we had them show up also and the worst thing you can do is google or hear all the doom and gloom. the U/S that found them before she told the doctor said she had seen 12 ppl that morning and SIX yes six of them had the cysts..that is how common they are!!! As a pp said if everything else looks good try not to worry...by the time we got to our 27 wk U/S they had dissapeared.
congrats on the two boys!!!!!!
I just want to repeat what the pps said. On an u/s we saw cysts on our DS (choroid plexus cysts). Everything is fine with him. They were gone by his next u/s 2-4 weeks later. According to our peri they are VERY common, and like someone else said it's just now the u/s equipment is so good they pick them up more.
Good luck....don't get too worried yet - and congrats on your 2 boys!
