2nd Trimester

I want your opinion!

Ok this was asked on the 0-6 month board by a friend of mine and I figured I would ask it here to get you ladies opinions.

When your LO gets older or if you have a LO now, what will you tell them when they ask about their "private parts"? Will you tell them that they have a penis/vagina or will you tell them a nickname for it? Or what have you told them if you have already had this talk!

We had a pretty funny conversation about this the other day on the way back from shopping and figured we'd ask!

Re: I want your opinion!

  • I told them the name of the parts...and our nicknames hahaha.  They have books for this sort of thing that are really good.  they compare boys and girls.  I bought a few on amazon.

  • I will tell them the real names. My mom always referred to them by their actual names so I guess that's what I'm used to. But it really made my 1st grade teacher angry when I told everyone in class what the real names were. She called my mom all irate and my mom said "well at least she used the proper terminology."

  • I will tell them what it's actually called.  A penis or a vagina.  I don't think there is anything wrong with them being educated at an early age...

  • I have a DS who is almost 2 years old and we use the real words.
  • My kids will probably get a technical, anatomically correct explanation. I don't like nicknames - they'll hear enough of those when they get older. And when they're older, they can knowmore about the actual baby-making process, but till then they just need to know the basic "boys have a penis, and girls have a vagina". It satisfies their curiosity for the time being.
  • LOL We were chatting about this the other night.  FI's best friend's 5 year old not only knows the correct name but when he asked how babies come into the world, they gave him every single detail.

I would do the same.  There's nothing wrong with using the exact words...its not like its used as slang to mean something else.

  • I have always used the correct terms, but my son is now five and a half and thinks works like boobies, nuts and balls are very funny, he's not even in kindergarden yet, so they will pick it up no matter what! LOL
