How much $ to change the name on plane ticket?

Has anyone done this?  I haven't looked into yet, but I'm curious.

Re: How much $ to change the name on plane ticket?

  • I don't know about a name but to change dates, they charged us 100 for each ticket. I think it depends on the airline also.
  • I'm pretty sure that plane tickets aren't transferrable--you can't change the name on a ticket and give it to someone else.  That said, DH accidentally got me a ticket with my married name before I changed it over.  All my ID still had my maiden name on it, so I was afraid I wouldn't get past security.  I called the airline (Virgin America) and explained the situation and they had me fax a letter explaining and a copy of my marriage license and they made the change for free.

Really?  I have heard of people doing this before.  I just figured they'd charge a crazy amount.  Anyway, I was trying to find some info on United's website, but there are some issues with their website right now, so I'll have to check later.  Thanks!

  • i think the pp is right that technically they're non-transferable. that said, i'm thinking for the $100 change fee you could basically rebook your flight in a different name.
  • Tickets are non-transferable. United's ticket change is I believe a minimum of $150 now.  Rebooking a flight costs $150 + any additional fare difference, so if you booked a cheap ticket and those fares are gone, you'll be subject to the fare increase.

  • Cannot change names as far as I know.  When we went to see relatives my step-son was to go too & then ended up getting bad grades & we did not allow him to go.  I wanted to change the ticket into my DD name so she would have a seat & they wouldn't let us.  They said we have a year to use the ticket in SS name & then we have to pay the differance of what the ticket would cost on the day we want it for.  So if I paid 200 for the ticket & todays rate is 300 then we owe them 100
