Outdoor birthday party?

I want to do a birthday party for my son this summer (July) in our back yard.  We have a small house so if it rains we can't really have it.  Do you put a rain date on the invitation?  How does that normally go?

I hate rain dates but yeah, I had my DD's first bday in the backyard and put a rain date for the following weekend, same time on the invite.
