Are you planning on using bumpers?
I keep hearing mixed things about them...some moms say they're dangerous not to have them if the baby gets stuck in the bars? or that they're a breathing hazard if you do have them?
but if the baby can get to the bumpers in the first place wouldn't they be able to move away from them?
Just wondering what you ladies are planning...
Re: Will you use bumpers?
I won't be using them, but here's why:
I think the breathing hazard part is just that when you have them up, it restricts fresh air flow in the crib. They don't say it's a suffocation risk. Some SIDS theories are that the baby is breathing in too much exhaled CO2 and not enough fresh oxygen.
I'm not saying don't use them. I just thought I'd let you know why they say it's a breathing hazard. We used one for my son, and will probably use them for this baby too.
And, no- No bumpers. Waste of money, IMO.
We will use them, with a ceiling fan.
I did'nt know this. Great info
Yes
With DS, I had them in when he was first born. Once he could roll over one way, I took them out. Once he could freely move in the crib and he was getting his arm stuck in the bars, I put them back.

Just a few notes I've found on various national health websites:
Main uses for bumpers include aesthetics, keeping the inside of a crib warm, and keeping the sides padded if the child were to roll into the bars.
The baby can't get stuck in the bars until he/she is able to roll over into them AND the bars are far enough part to get something stuck in.
Also, if a child were to roll into the bumper, (risking SIDS) he/she can also roll away from it. The risk of bumper-induced SIDS is so minimal, that you'd have to essentially put an immobile infant down in the crib face-down right next to the bumper to cause any real risk.
Research has shown that no baby, no matter the size, can roll into the bars with enough force to cause any head trauma or damage other than a minor bump that MIGHT wake them up.
ditto.
Ditto.
I've heard the SIDS risk about bumpers as well, but geez, it's like everything causes SIDS now. Does anything not cause it? The very act of living is a risk, in my opinion.
I'll try to do what's safest for my baby, don't get me wrong. But it's not like I'm going to pad the walls with bubble wrap.
MrsKent - great info - Thanks!!
Nope not using them. It is a risk factor and I don?t want to be a statistic
Nope. Not worth the potential risk in my opinion
I never understood using them so that "baby doesn't get stuck in the bars". cribs are designed with the slats close enough together so that CAN'T happen.
No - I will not. I do not see the point. They increase the chances of SIDS. Not worth the risk to me - if something happened I would always wonder if it was because of that.
They're a breathing hazard because they also reduce the airflow around the baby - not just if the baby is up againt them.
Besides, babies heads can't get stuck between the bars anymore - that is one of the safety standards for cribs.
In Canada anyway they say the sleep positioners are a SIDS risk too - the baby could wiggle around and suffocate if the positioner get in front of their face.
Same here.
