please tell me you're kidding. "Rhys" doesn't sound more masculine to me, just looks like his parent's can't spell. Reece is a fine name.
Rhys is the Welsh spelling of Reece, and has likely been around much longer than Reece. So it isn't that someone's parents can't spell. However, I do think people in the US, as shown by this point and the one below, won't know how to say it and will instead jump to the conclusion that is spelled incorrectly.

Actually Rhys, is the ORIGINAL spelling of Reece, its a welch name and thats how its spelt...Reece is the alternative version sourced form Rhys (they are both pronounced the same). So yeah, i can spell.

I truly had no idea. I guess I can see why/how the Reece version came about? I prefer it a lot more.

It's WelSh, not WelCh But yes, I said the same thing in the post before yours. People are so quick to jump on the misspelling bandwagon that they jump all over you when it is actually a correct spelling.

I didn't know, and certainly didn't mean to offend...but I think it made a good point that I don't think many people would know that was an original spelling.
correct spelling or not, it's going to be harder for people to figure it out. however that doesn't mean you shouldn't use it, just be prepared to explain it over and over. "It's pronounced Reese, it's the traditional Welsh spelling" may be something you start to get really irritated about saying.

being honest, I was stumped on how to pronounce to Rhys. Also my first thought was the spelling was wrong.
With that said, I prefer Reece (although its nms).

Wow! It amazes me how many people are so quick to judge people's names! It's one thing to share your opinion, (which was asked for, so it should be shared) but I think it's pretty funny so many people are accusing others of poor spelling when in reality, many people's names are just traditional to their culture. It's so funny to me when people do this....there is a whole world out there ladies! Imo, what a boring place it would be if we were all the same.
Just because YOU can't spell something, or YOU can't pronounce something, or YOU obviously haven't been exposed to another particular country/culture etc... it doesn't mean that the OTHER person is not just as normal/right/correct!
I'm just wondering why this is the post that people are getting jumped on for being critical of peoples name choices - it happens in a lot of the posts and normally by far more people than the few of us in this one that did.

Kelly- You're right, it does. And I am always very positive in my posts. I normally only comment if I have something nice to say... The mood just hit me tonight- bad day I guess! Nothing aimed at your personally, sorry if it came out that way. Just felt like venting and this was where I did it!

No problem, I wasn't aiming that at you specifically either, and I normally only comment nice things too, I guess my mood might have been off today too. And, as soon as I read that it was the traditional Welsh spelling, I apologized - I really had no idea.
But if you are going to go with it, please choose Reece. I don't care if the original spelling is Rhys - don't try to be 'yoonique.'
Spelling it Rhys wouldn't be in an effort to be 'yoonique' - that would be spelling it rheaycae. Rhys is a true spelling of it.
I also am normally positive but it is irritating that people think Rhys is made up because they don't know it. It is a quite common name and spelling in other parts of the world outside of, gasp, the US.

I actually had the exact same debate with my coworkers yesterday! I love the name and would prefer the spelling Rhys, however almost everyone disagreed with me. I wrote it down first and let everyone look at the spelling and most weren't sure how to pronounce it either!! So, on to the next name....
For those of you who think it is spelled incorrectly, according to www.babynamewizard.com "RHYS" was ranked #5 in Wales and in the top 50s in Ireland, Scotland and England.
please tell me you're kidding.? "Rhys" doesn't sound more masculine to me, just looks like his parent's can't spell.? Reece is a fine name.?

I knew how Rhys was pronounced and the origins of it, mostly thanks to baby name posts. ?It's not an obnoxious misspelled version, but a lot of people don't know that because it isn't the traditional American spelling. ?Their fault to be sure. ?However, unless you want to spend the rest of your child's life saying exactly what you said above over and over again, I personally think you should make life easier for yourself and your child and go with Reece. ?Otherwise you are always going to have to get on a soapbox to defend yourself, and that's no fun.
This was a name we considered (but decided against) for a boy. I personally prefer Reece. The actress is REESE Witherspoon, and according to the Baby Name Wizard, the spelling Reece is pretty much exclusively male, while Reese can be either. Rhys is definitely exclusively male. As evidenced by the responses to this post, I think if it matters to you that people will have a hard time spelling or pronouncing the name (or people thinking you made it up), I'd go with Reece. If it doesn't matter to you, I think that either is nice.

Reese Witherspoons real first name is actually Mary Jane or something like that. Reese is a family name she plugged in front of her last name strictly as her acting name.
Re: Rhys or Reece?
This post genuinely confused me. I read Rhys as "Rice." I like Reese.

Do you mean for a boy or a girl or either?
I agree that Rhys is more masculine, to be honest I am not crazy about it. Reece is probably fine for both.

Rhys.
I like the traditional spelling.
I like both, but think he'd have a hard time constantly correcting how people pronounce his name.
My neighbor's name is Maurice and he goes by Reese. Just an option.

NMS. Reminds me of Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

Reece. I dont like Rhys at all.
Edited to add: I knew Rhys was the original spelling (I lived overseas for 12 years!), but I think in America, Reece is just easier.
Rhys is a boy, Reece is a girl. To me anyway.
Like John Rhys-Davis and Reece Witherspoon.

If it is for a boy, I would use Rhys.
If it is for a girl, I would use Reece.
